I’m trying to use my word, but I keep getting a message to sign in to 365 or sign up for a trial, but I’m already signed in.

I am trying to edit a word file, but it keeps telling me to sign in to Microsoft 365 or to start a three month trial, but I’m already signed in.

Hello Karen,

If Microsoft Word is repeatedly prompting you to sign in to Microsoft 365 or start a trial even though you are already signed in, this usually indicates an activation or licensing issue, not a problem with your account credentials. Being signed in and having an active license are two separate states.

This commonly occurs when Word is signed in with an account that does not have a Microsoft 365 license (for example, a personal account instead of a work account), when the license was recently assigned and has not fully synced, or when the application is using cached or outdated activation information. In some cases, Word may also be installed as a trial or preinstalled version that has not been properly activated.

To resolve this, please ensure that you are signed in with the account that holds an active Microsoft 365 license, verify the license status under File → Account, and, if necessary, sign out and sign back in. Reinstalling Microsoft 365 from https://www.office.com while signed in with the licensed account often resolves persistent activation prompts. Removing unused or old accounts connected to Office on the device may also help.

If the issue continues after these steps, please confirm that your account has a valid Microsoft 365 license that includes desktop applications.

Kind regards,

Hinesh Bandlamudi

Hello, thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A.

Could you please let me know which type of Office license is associated with your Microsoft account? For example, do you have a Microsoft 365 subscription linked to your account, or a one-time (perpetual) Office license?

Please sign in with your Microsoft account on the Services & subscriptions page to verify whether your subscription is active:

    https://account.microsoft.com/services

If the subscription is active but the license is no longer recognized, sign out of your account in the Office apps and sign in again. (Go to File > Accounts > Sign out)

If it is still not registered, repair the Office applications in your App settings and sign in with your account again.

I pay for a monthly personal subscription through Apple. The last receipt I received has a payment date of January 22, 2026.

Since you are paying via the Apple App store, you have to manage your subscription via Apple as well.

I guess you mean you are running Office on a Mac device?

Or are you perhaps running Office on multiple devices (PCs and Macs)?
