GPT Realtime maximum session length 30 minutes

TL;DR

I am experiencing a discrepancy in session limits for a production speech-to-speech agent. OpenAI (US) allows for 60-minute sessions, while Azure OpenAI (EU) disconnects users at 30 minutes. Are there plans to align Azure’s session limits with OpenAI’s 60-minute maximum?

Hi there

I have a deployed production speech-to-speech agent using GPT Realtime model via a SIP telephony route.

For my US customers, the inbound SIP trunk connects directly to the OpenAI Realtime SIP webhook. These sessions run smoothly for up to 60 minutes before hitting the server-side hard stop documented by OpenAI: "The maximum duration of a Realtime session is 60 minutes."

However, for my EU customers connecting via the Microsoft Azure OpenAI Realtime webhook, sessions are frequently disconnected at exactly 30 minutes. I’ve noted that the Azure documentation confirms a 30-minute maximum session duration, whereas the base OpenAI model supports double that time: "The maximum session duration is 30 minutes."

This 30-minute limit is a significant friction point for our European users compared to the US experience. Are there any immediate plans to extend Azure’s session limits to 60 minutes to align with the OpenAI configuration?

I appreciate your help and look forward to your guidance.

Laurence

The current maximum session duration for the Azure OpenAI Realtime API is indeed 30 minutes, as confirmed in the Azure documentation. This is a limitation that differs from the OpenAI configuration, which allows for a maximum session duration of 60 minutes. At this time, there is no information available regarding plans to extend Azure's session limits to align with OpenAI's 60-minute maximum. For any updates or changes to these limits, it would be best to monitor the official Azure OpenAI documentation or announcements from Microsoft.
