How to add watermark in word on web (not desktop). Instructions on MS do not work1

I want to add a watermark to a word document on the web, not via the desktop version. I found the MS help answer to either edit in the desktop version, add the watermark which I tried. Sure enough it works - it adds the watermark to the desktop word version. I save it. I close it. And I reopen from the web version in desktop word. The watermark is still there so I know it is saved in the web version. But it does SHOW in the web version, even though MS help says it will.

So I tried adding a picture in the header on the web version, making the header picture behind text, but it only shows in the header I cannot expand it to the whole page. So that doesn't work either.

Google docs watermark is supported natively online. Google docs is so much simpler sharing and working online together and it works far better than word online.

Word online is inferior compared to the full desktop version that runs on a PC (or Mac). To let Microsoft know that you want improvements in Word online, use the Help > Feedback facility.

Developers and decision makers at Microsoft do not read the Q&A forums.

In Word for the web, watermarks cannot be created or edited directly. They will display in the document when viewed in View mode, but in Edit mode, they appear as placeholders that cannot be moved or resized. This means that while you can see the watermark in the desktop version after adding it there, it will not show in the web version as a fully functional watermark. The only way to add a watermark in Word for the web is to use the desktop version to create it, as you have already done, but it will not be editable or visible in the web version as intended.

If you need to add a visual element that functions similarly to a watermark, you might consider inserting a picture in the header as you mentioned. However, this method has limitations, as the image will only appear in the header and cannot be expanded to cover the entire page.

For more advanced features like watermarking, the desktop version of Word is recommended since Word for the web has limited capabilities in this regard.
