Why Microsoft Word Online is such a mess and not functional at all?

I have been using Microsoft Word Online (Office 365) for few days and it is really pain in the ass. Really bad UX with limited UI. You can't even add drawing or image without destroying the whole document and the worst part of it is that you can't fix it unless you copy your text that was above or under the attachment, paste it to the Notepad so the format of the text to be cleared by itself and then get back to Word and paste the cleared text. Awful pain in the ass. I am very disappointed!!!

The online app was designed as an adjunct helper for users of the desktop applications. Those are part of the Personal or Family subscriptions to Microsoft 365. The desktop applications are what is in Office 2024.

Here is my pdf on the different programs from Microsoft, all named "Word."

This is an understatement. NO print preview? Page break view? Excel has more options than word.

Anything with mixed text & images is impossible to create. You are better off with Canva!

    Hi Maja,

I get how annoying that feels when a tool slows you down instead of helping. Word Online is designed as a lightweight version of the desktop app, so some advanced features like freeform drawing and complex image handling aren’t fully supported yet. That’s why formatting can break when you insert images or drawings.

A quick workaround is to use the “Insert > Picture” option and then adjust layout with “Wrap Text” set to “In Line with Text” or “Square” to keep things stable. If you need more control, opening the document in the desktop Word app through “Open in Desktop App” usually solves these issues.

Can you tell me if you’re working on a shared document or just your own? That helps me suggest the best option for you.

    Warm regards,

    Rez

Is the desktop version available? I was told it's obsolete, but I greatly prefer it.

Microsoft Word Online does have some limitations compared to the desktop version of Word. For instance, it does not support certain features like adding content controls or using advanced formatting options that are available in the desktop app. Additionally, while you can insert images and drawings, the experience may not be as seamless as in the desktop version, which can lead to formatting issues in your document.

If you're experiencing significant issues with formatting when adding images or drawings, it might be helpful to ensure that you are using the latest version of your web browser, as browser technology can affect the functionality of web applications like Word Online.

For more complex document editing needs, consider using the desktop version of Word, which offers a fuller range of features and better handling of formatting and layout.
