Why is it okay for Onedrive to be forced on us?

It appears yesterday, my personal computer updated and OneDrive was installed. Perhaps it was always on here and I didn't know, but today I'm noticing my pc is slow, and I have files missing out of a folder that I created specifically for these files.......What is going on? I use the forum here to learn how to remove it from my computer only to find out that my documents folder is missing. I restore my computer to get my folder back......with onedrive waiting and operating it seems.

And this is the most serious part......... OneDrive was already uploading my files to their cloud.

This is a problem. I am writing a story and I don't want it on the internet! (Correction: I am incorrect about the ONLINE; what it is is that my files are only accessible IF I am online. Still a trashy move Msoft)

Only after restoring to yesterdays update am I getting pop ups telling me all about OneDrive. I didn't get these pop ups before. And see, I only get 5 gigs of storage but look I can upgrade to a subscription for more! and oh, here's a pop up showing how you can tell something is available on the internet or just the pc, and I go and look at MY FILES!!!!!! MINE, and what do I see? My story on the cloud and only accessible from the cloud. (Again, not on the the cloud, perse, arguable in my opinion if I can only access them, that I made, when I am connected to the internet)

I'm a nobody so who cares. I'm very upset about this and I'm leaving you Microsoft, I'm switching as soon as I have the money, Microsoft, you got too greedy, you broke my heart, and you stole something from me and put it exactly where I didn't want it (again, I say it's arguable). It's clear you don't care about people and you haven't since Windows 7. Prove me wrong.

Still its frustrating, even though users use office 365, I think Microsoft should tale explicit permission to upload documents into web. What if a user doesnt want certain files to leak out.

    Hey Citizen117,

I get why you're frustrated with OneDrive. It sounds like it took over your files without permission, which is annoying. Let’s clear up what happened and how to fix it.

Likely, a Windows update re-enabled OneDrive, since Windows 10 and 11 have it built-in. If you didn't opt out during setup, it might have started syncing your Documents folder automatically. OneDrive's syncing can make files seem missing, storing them in the cloud with Files On-Demand. That's why your story seemed to be only on the cloud.

Restoring your system brought back the local version, but OneDrive probably re-enabled itself post-restore, causing pop-ups and re-syncing. The 5GB limit messages are just reminders notifying you to upgrade.

    To stop this:

    1. Turn off OneDrive: Unlink your computer (OneDrive settings>Account>Unlink this PC), then uninstall it (Settings>Apps>look for Onedrive>right click then Uninstall).
    2. Stop automatic folder syncing: Before unlinking, turn off syncing for Documents, Pictures, and Desktop (OneDrive settings>Backup>Manage backup).
    3. Keep files on your computer: After turning off OneDrive, move files from the OneDrive folder to a local folder like C:\Users\Documents to keep them offline or to another partition, drive or external storage.

Are you using a Microsoft or local account to log into Windows, and are you on Windows 10 or 11?

Hope this helps. All the best.

o365 is available to purchase, or if a new PC there will be a pre-installed o365 Family Trial, but untill you use it and use/create the MS Account associated with o365 that install/trial will be "dumb"

No win updtate installes o365 trial or other and no win update activates any pre-installed o365 Family Trial, this can only be done by the win user, you
