Windows automatically slows down or stops your hard drive when it detects the system is idle. When you later click on something, the drive has to spin back up, causing a brief delay before your file or program loads.

If you are using an HDD, then delays are expected. Power-saving features are enabled

The drive has gone into idle / sleep mode. The system is low on RAM and keeps reloading data from disk.

Hi, I'm Bernard, a fellow Windows user. I'm happy to help!

Based on your input, it seems that there is a hardware-related issue with the PC. Moreover, can you please check the System logs on the PC so I can further examine the root cause of the issue?

To share the System logs, please follow the steps in the link below:

Press the Windows key + X, then select "Event Viewer"

Click the drop-down of "Windows logs"

Right-click System > click Filter Current logs > Check: Critical, Warning, and Error > Hit OK

On the right pane, click "Save Filtered Log File As..."

Save the System logs file to your desktop and share it by following the steps from the link:

Note: You can also use your preferred cloud storage to upload and share the logs.

To address the lagging issue with your hard drive, consider the following steps:

    1. Defragment Your Hard Drive: Regularly defragmenting your hard drive can help improve performance. Windows has a built-in tool called Optimize Drives that can be run manually or scheduled to run automatically. If your drive is more than 10% fragmented, it is advisable to optimize it.
    2. Monitor Drive Space Utilization: Ensure that you maintain at least 20% to 25% of your disk space as free space. A full disk can lead to performance degradation as the system struggles to find space for new data.
    3. Check for Disk Errors: Use the Check Disk program to identify and repair any errors on your hard drive. Errors can slow down your device significantly.
    4. Optimize Disk Usage: If your hard drive is not continuously running, it may be due to how data is written and accessed. Ensuring that your disk is well organized and not overly fragmented can help with this.
    5. Consider Hardware Upgrades: If the performance issues persist, you might want to consider upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD), which offers faster data access speeds compared to traditional hard drives.

By following these steps, you should be able to reduce lag and improve the responsiveness of your hard drive.
