Is it normal that ~50% of my DNS traffic goes to Microsoft telemetry domains?

Hello,

I recently installed AdGuard Home and discovered something quite surprising about my PC - it seems to be working as a Microsoft telemetry sensor.

Over the last 24 hours, the statistics look like this:

  • eu-mobile.events.data.microsoft.com - ~2,700 requests
  • eu-teams.events.data.microsoft.com - ~2,000 requests
  • eu-office.events.data.microsoft.com - ~1,900 requests

In total, almost half of all DNS requests from my computer are related to Microsoft tracking / telemetry domains!!!

I have a few questions:

  1. What kind of data requires thousands of requests per day to be sent?
  2. Why does this traffic continue constantly, even when I’m not actively using Teams, Office, or Edge?

Is this considered normal behavior in terms of privacy and network usage?

  1. Is there an official way to reduce or limit this traffic without breaking half of the system?

A slightly sarcastic bonus question: If I pay for electricity and internet, while my PC spends a significant amount of time sending telemetry data - can I consider myself an edge node for Microsoft??? 🙂

I would appreciate a technical explanation, rather than generic statements about “improving the user experience”.

Thank you.

    Hello, Leonid Frolov.

Yes, information about telemetry is scattered in different reference sections. More or less detailed documentation is available for IT specialists and System administrators of organizations in this article.: https://learn.microsoft.com/ru-ru/windows/privacy/configure-windows-diagnostic-data-in-your-organization

There are also descriptions of the management of telemetry through group policies. Also, to limit the total traffic that the OS spends on "its own needs", you can configure in the Parameters:

    User's image

This mainly applies to updates, but it also captures some of the telemetry.

Well, you can block data exchange with specific nodes by editing the hosts file located in the folder "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc "

The added nodes will be blocked "for communication."

P.S. If it is more convenient for you to conduct a conversation in Russian, then write.
