How to get older Acrobat XI to run on Win 11

I recently installed Win 11 and am learning to regret it.

I was using Adobe Acrobat XI previously and neglected to uninstall it when I wiped my drive to install Win 11. I was able to use the install CE and reinstall Acrobat, but it said that there were too many computers using the serial number, even though I know that ALL of the computers except this one have been retired (probably not with Acrobat uninstalled.) Checking with Adobe, it says that their registration servers are no longer active, but it still gives me that message. I can open a PDF file but it automatically closes in a short time (barely enough to print it if I'm quick.)

I have uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat XI but it still closes files before anything can really be done with them.

Any advice beyond buying the latest version of Acrobat?

It seems that you are experiencing compatibility issues with Adobe Acrobat XI on Windows 11. Since Adobe has stated that their registration servers for Acrobat XI are no longer active, this could be contributing to the problems you are facing with the serial number and the application closing unexpectedly.

Here are a few suggestions that might help you resolve the issue:

    1. Check for Compatibility Mode: Right-click on the Acrobat XI shortcut, go to Properties, and under the Compatibility tab, try running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 10 or an earlier version.
    2. Update Graphics Drivers: Ensure that your graphics drivers are up to date, as outdated drivers can cause issues with older software.
    3. Disable Third-Party Add-ins: Sometimes, third-party add-ins can cause conflicts. Try disabling any unnecessary add-ins within Acrobat.
    4. Use Adobe Cleaner Tool: If you haven't already, consider using the Adobe Cleaner Tool to remove all traces of Acrobat XI before attempting a fresh installation.
    5. Contact Adobe Support: If the issue persists, reaching out to Adobe support for assistance might provide you with more specific guidance, especially regarding the serial number issue.

If none of these solutions work, upgrading to a newer version of Acrobat may ultimately be necessary, as older versions may not be fully supported on newer operating systems.

Hello Kevin Hansen, welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.

Unfortunately there's no workaround for the registration server issue. Adobe's activation servers for Acrobat XI went offline when it reached end-of-life, so even with a valid serial number, the software can't be activated anymore. The auto-closing you're seeing is it enforcing the unactivated state.

The good news is you don't actually need to buy anything right now. There are free alternatives that will let you open and work with PDFs on Windows 11 until you decide if you want to invest in paid software later.

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC is the free official Adobe product and handles viewing, printing, and basic editing. Since you're already familiar with Adobe's interface, this would be the easiest transition.

PDF-XChange Editor, Foxit PDF Reader and SumatraPDF are also free options with similar capabilities.

You can always upgrade to a paid version down the line if you find you need more advanced features.
