When you press CTRL + F or CTRL + H, the application flashes briefly, but no dialog is shown to enter your text. I checked updates and it reports that Office is up to date. I also tried starting in safe mode and the dialog is then shown.

I managed to fix it in the end by going to Task View, right clicking on the dialog and selecting Close. Then pressing CTRL + H again displayed the dialog on top of Word.

Since you mention Task View, was the dialog box in another (virtual) desktop?
There was only one virtual desktop. It was showing in the task view for one of the monitors, but was not actually visible on the monitor screen.

Your description suggests that the Find & Replace dialog box (Ctrl+H) may be opening outside the current screen. If you have ever had a second screen attached, try attaching it again and see if you can drag the Find & Replace window back into view on the correct screen.

Are the monitors set to Extend the screen area? Are there any signs that the Find & Replace windows is "hiding" on one of the screens?
Since you mentioned that the Navigation pane (Results tab, Ctrl+F) is also malfunctioning, maybe the underlying issue is something else.
A screen shot of the interface in Word may help us diagnose the issue more clearly.
P.S. One possibility is to delete the Data and Options registry keys for Word. This will reset the positions for interface elements, but it will also delete some settings you have selected in Word.
