If I never linked my Skype username to an email or phone number then it was never a Microsoft account? Could I ever have created/used OneDrive using my Skype only-username account?

If you never linked your Skype username to an email or phone number, then it is likely that your Skype account is not a Microsoft account. Microsoft accounts are typically associated with an email address or phone number. Therefore, if your Skype account was not linked to any of these, you would not have been able to create or use OneDrive with just your Skype username account. OneDrive requires a Microsoft account for access, which is tied to an email or phone number for identification and security purposes.
