Try the following steps on the laptop where the Dell monitor appears too large.
- Verify which display is affected
- Select Start > Settings > System > Display.
- In the diagram at the top, select the Dell monitor (click Identify if needed to see which is which).
- Check Scale & layout
- With the Dell monitor selected, scroll to Scale & layout.
- Set Scale to the value marked (Recommended). If both monitors are similar size/resolution, try setting the same scale on both (for example, 125% on each) so UI elements appear consistent.
- If the scale was changed, sign out and sign back in to apply changes cleanly.
- Check display resolution
- Still in Display settings with the Dell monitor selected, under Display resolution, choose the option marked (Recommended).
- Applying a non‑native or lower resolution can make items look larger and less sharp; using the recommended resolution keeps sizing correct.
- Use Windows’ multiple‑monitor options
- Press Windows key + P and confirm you are using Extend (not Duplicate to a different‑resolution screen, which can cause odd scaling).
- If using a wireless adapter or dock
- If the Dell monitor is connected via a wireless display adapter or dock, open Display settings and again ensure the Display resolution is set to the Recommended value for that monitor.
- If using a Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter, also check its app and use Fit to Display to adjust overscan if parts of the desktop are cut off.
- If Office apps look wrong only on that monitor
- In an Office app (Word, Excel, etc.), go to File > Options > General.
- Under When using multiple displays, select Optimize for compatibility, then restart the app. This can help when one monitor renders Office UI at a different size.
If the issue persists only with this one laptop, also confirm the graphics driver is up to date from the laptop manufacturer, as outdated drivers can cause per‑monitor scaling problems.
