I had a notification from Quicken that there was an update to their software. I clicked on update and download the update. However, Quicken is now not able to load. I have un installed and reinstalled the Quicken update but that did not work. I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with Quicken support but they were unable to solve the issue. They requested I contact microsoft to insure my computer did not have issues.

    Hi,

Since Quicken stopped opening immediately after its own software update, the issue is most likely related to the application itself rather than Windows. If other programs are opening normally and you are not receiving any Windows error messages, this indicates that the operating system is functioning correctly.

To check the Windows side, please try the following:

    • Restart your computer completely.

Click the Start button > click the Power icon > Restart.

    • Make sure Windows is fully updated: Go to Settings > System > Windows Update > Check for Windows Update then apply all pending.
    • Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus software and try launching Quicken again.
    • Right-click the Quicken shortcut and select Run as administrator.

If Quicken still does not open after these steps, the issue is likely with the recent Quicken update, and their support team would need to provide a patch or further troubleshooting. Since the problem began after their update and persists even after reinstalling, it points back to the application rather than Windows itself.

Open control panel, search for "reliability", open "View reliability history".

Look for crashes from Quicken.exe. Select "View technical details" if you find any and share the information.

The Quicken icon should be on your desktop. Press and hold the CTRL key while you double click on the icon. That should launch the application without opening your data file. Click on Help, About Quicken. What version are you running?

From the file menu, select Validate and Repair File. Select your .QDF file and run the validation.

Run WinVer. Let us know what version of Windows you are running. I am running the latest Windows and Quicken versions and do not have any problem.

Follow these steps to check for and fix possible Windows/Office-side issues that could prevent Quicken from running after its update:

    1. Update Office
      • Open any Office app (for example, Word) and create a new blank document.
      • Go to File > Account (or Office Account in Outlook).
      • Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
      • Let updates complete, then restart the PC.
    2. Update Windows and device drivers Quicken may rely on components that can be affected by outdated Windows or drivers. For Windows 11:
      • Select Start and type Settings.
      • Open Settings > Windows Update.
      • Click Check for updates.
      • Install all available updates and restart.
      For Windows 10:
      • Select Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update.
      • Select Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.
      • Install all available updates and restart.
If the issue persists after general Windows Update:
      • From the PC or device manufacturer’s website, update at least these drivers: video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard.
      • If using a laptop, also install any vendor-specific updates (for example, updated DisplayLink drivers if applicable).
    3. Check for conflicting add-ins or integrations with Office If Quicken integrates with Office (for example, exporting to Excel) and Office is crashing or unstable, disable problematic add-ins:
      • Open an Office app.
      • Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
      • At the bottom, next to Manage, choose COM Add-ins (and other add-in types if present) and click Go.
      • Uncheck non-Microsoft add-ins, especially older ones known to cause issues (for example, ABBYY FineReader, Dragon Naturally Speaking, PowerWord).
      • Restart the Office app normally and confirm it works.
      • If Office stabilizes after disabling an add-in, leave that add-in disabled or update it from the vendor.
    4. Repair Office (if Office apps also show errors or “stopped working” messages)
      • Use the Office repair options (Quick Repair first, then Online Repair if needed) as described in the linked article in the reference.
      • After repair, restart the PC and test Quicken again.
    5. If Windows Update itself is failing or appears corrupted If Windows updates are repeatedly failing or the system shows update-related errors, perform a repair of Windows using the official methods in the references (resetting Windows Update components or installing updates in a clean boot). A corrupted Windows update stack can affect application launches.

If Quicken still does not open after:

    • Office is fully updated and repaired,
    • Windows and drivers are fully updated,
    • Problematic Office add-ins are disabled,

then the remaining troubleshooting must be done on the Quicken side (for example, their compatibility with the latest Windows/Office build, or a bad Quicken update), since the Microsoft-side environment will have been validated.
