The concept of 'ownership' does not apply with a computer. Anyone who has a user account on a computer can sign in and use the computer, just as if they had purchased it on their own. All your wife needs to use the computer - to 'own' it of you wish - is to create a user account.

Keep in mind that a Windows PC needs to have one Administrator account (no more than one is needed) and any number of user accounts. You can create a new Administrator account for your wife, which she will use to create a regular user account for herself. Then your wife can remove all of your user accounts, if desired, and the computer is exclusively hers to use.

Before removing your user account, be sure to move all your personal files off the computer.

    1

Backup all your files to an external drive first to ensure against data loss.

    You then have two options.

    2

If you want your wife to use the current user account on the laptop:

    Open the Settings App.

Go to Accounts - Your Info.

On that settings window, do you see the option to either 'Switch to a Local account' or the option to stop automatically logging into apps with this account'?

If you see either of those options, select it.

That will switch the login to a Local account.

You can then add your wife's Microsoft account details to that account.

    3

Or you can create a new user account for your wife, and delete your own user account and data.

    Open the Settings App

Go to Accounts - Family and other People (or Other Users, if you are using Windows 11).

In there, you can add a new account to the laptop.

Follow the prompts to create a new account

    Close the settings app

Log out of your user account

    Log into your new account

Click the Start Button, type netplwiz and hit Enter

In the resulting dialog, select the old account and click 'Remove'

That's It, your new Admin Account will replace the old account

To transfer a Windows PC to a new owner without doing a factory reset, the secure and recommended approach is to reset Windows while removing personal data, then let the new owner set it up as their own. A full factory image flash is not required, but a Windows reset is.

    Steps:

    1. Back up needed data
      • Sign in with the current account and back up any files that must be kept (documents, photos, etc.) to external storage or another PC. Guidance for backup is provided in Windows support articles such as “How to back up or transfer your data on a Windows-based computer” and “Back up your Windows PC.”
    2. Reset the PC for a new user (recommended)
      • If Windows is working and Settings is accessible:
        1. Open Settings.
        2. Go to System > Recovery (on Windows 11) or Update & Security > Recovery (on Windows 10).
        3. Under Reset this PC, select Get started.
        4. Choose Remove everything to prepare the PC for a new user.
        5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.
      • If Settings is not accessible:
        1. Select the power button on the sign-in screen or Start menu.
        2. Hold Shift and select Restart.
        3. In the recovery menu, select Troubleshoot.
        4. Select Reset your PC to prepare it for another user.
This reset removes personal files, apps, and settings, and prepares the device for the next owner without needing to flash the original factory image.
    3. Let the new owner complete setup
      • After reset, the PC will boot into the out-of-box experience (OOBE).
      • The new owner (your wife) can:
        • Accept license terms.
        • Sign in with her own Microsoft account.
        • Configure her own settings and preferences.
    4. (Optional) Remove the device from the original Microsoft account
      • After the reset and once the new owner is using the device, the previous owner can remove the device from their Microsoft account so it is no longer associated with them:
        1. Go to https://account.microsoft.com/devices and sign in.
        2. Select the device, choose More actions > Remove, confirm removal.
        3. If needed, also choose Unlink for Microsoft Store device limits.

This process transfers practical ownership while protecting the original owner’s data and identity, without requiring a factory image reflash.
