Cannot Pin Icons To Taskbar

Hi everyone,

I cannot pin icons to my taskbar. I have tried doing it directly from my desktop and search in Start, but it doesn't work. If I right-click my icon, I do not get "Pin To Taskbar" in the menu, even when I select Show More Options. Also, dragging and dropping does not work. Can anyone help? I just bought an OLED monitor and want to remove all icons from my desktop.

Cheers :)

What types of icons are you trying to pin to the Taskbar, are they app icons or for files on your system?

Open the Start Menu and click the All button so you can see the long alphabetical list of installed apps, if you right click an app icon on that long list, do you get the 'Pin to Taskbar' option?

If not, open the Settings App.

    Go to Accounts.

Select Access Work or School, is there is a work or school Email listed there?

On Windows 11, “Pin to taskbar” is only available when Windows recognizes the item as an app that can be pinned and when taskbar pinning is allowed. If the option is missing everywhere and drag‑and‑drop does nothing, the most common causes are:

    1. The item is not being selected from the right place
    2. Taskbar pinning is blocked by policy or configuration

Try the following paths that are supported for pinning:

    1. Pin from Start / All apps
      1. Select Start.
      2. Select All apps.
      3. Find the app (for example, Word, Excel, Edge, etc.).
      4. Right‑click the app and choose Pin to taskbar.
    2. Pin from an open app on the taskbar
      1. Start the app normally (from Start > All apps).
      2. When the app is running, its icon appears on the taskbar.
      3. Right‑click that taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar.
    3. Pin Microsoft 365 apps after reinstall
      1. Open Start.
      2. Go to All apps and locate Word, Excel, etc.
      3. Drag each app from Start to the taskbar, or right‑click and choose Pin to taskbar.

If none of the above shows Pin to taskbar for any app and drag‑and‑drop still does nothing, then taskbar pinning is likely disabled by a policy or customization (for example, a configured taskbar layout that locks pins). In that case, taskbar pinning must be re‑enabled or the layout policy removed by the administrator or the configuration that set it.

Once apps are pinned, desktop icons can be removed without losing quick access to apps, which helps reduce static elements on an OLED screen.
