My outlook folders are suddenly "empty"

My Outlook email suddenly stopped receiving emails. I reset the imap servers, and afterwards all my folders disappeared. Later, the folders came back, but they appear to be empty. How can I get my saved mail back into the folders? Pretty sure I am using Classic Outlook 2021.

i think ur imap just lost the uid link… if u still see the mails in ur webmail, close outlook and rename the .ost in %localappdata%\Microsoft\Outlook to .old so it rebuilds clean, and just peek the sync status after.

For an IMAP account in Classic Outlook 2021, “folders came back but look empty” usually means either:

    • Outlook is not subscribed to the server folders, or
    • The local view/cache is out of sync or corrupted, or
    • The folders (or default folders) are hidden at the mailbox level.

Work through these steps in order:

    1. Confirm the account type and IMAP settings
Make sure the account is actually configured as IMAP (not POP/Exchange with wrong server type). If it’s IMAP and you recently “reset” the servers, verify that the correct IMAP account type is selected for that provider. Using the wrong account type (for example, choosing Exchange/Microsoft 365 for a Hotmail/Outlook.com address) can prevent proper sync of existing mail and folders.
    2. Resubscribe to IMAP folders
If the folders exist on the server but appear empty or missing in Outlook, resubscribe to them:
      1. In Mail, in the Navigation Pane, right‑click the top folder for the IMAP account.
      2. Select IMAP Folders.
      3. Click Query to download the full folder list from the server.
      4. In the list, select each folder that should appear in Outlook and click Subscribe. Use Ctrl+click to select multiple folders.
      5. If a folder created on the server doesn’t appear, right‑click the top IMAP folder again and choose Update Folder List, then repeat the IMAP Folders → Query → Subscribe steps.
    3. Check for hidden default folders (Inbox, Sent Items, etc.)
If the default folders themselves are missing or appear as if they don’t exist, they may be marked hidden in the mailbox store. To fix this, reset the PR_ATTR_HIDDEN property using MFCMAPI:
      1. Download and extract the MFCMAPI tool.
      2. Run mfcmapi.exe and dismiss the intro screen with OK.
      3. On the Session menu, select Logon and choose the Outlook profile for this mailbox.
      4. Double‑click the mailbox (email address) to open it.
      5. In the left pane, navigate to the folders:
        • Cached Mode: expand Root – Mailbox → IPM_SUBTREE.
        • Online Mode: expand Root Container → Top of Information Store.
      6. Locate any folder that is “missing” or appears empty in Outlook.
      7. In the lower pane, find the PR_ATTR_HIDDEN property. If it is True, right‑click it, choose Edit Property, clear the Boolean checkbox, and select OK.
      8. Also check PR_ATTR_SYSTEM. If it is True, edit it the same way so it is False.
      9. Close all MFCMAPI windows and restart Outlook.
    4. If using Exchange/Outlook.com instead of IMAP
If the account is actually an Exchange account and not IMAP, and items are missing or not syncing, emptying the local cache for a folder can force a full resync from the server:
      1. Ensure the computer is connected to the server.
      2. In the folder list, Ctrl+click or right‑click the affected folder and select Properties.
      3. On the General tab, choose Empty Cache.
      4. Outlook will clear the local copy and re‑download items from the server.
This should only be used when the server still has the mail; anything not on the server will be lost from that folder.
    5. If items were actually deleted
If mail was deleted rather than just hidden/unsubscribed, check:
      • Deleted Items folder.
      • If not there, use Home → Recover Deleted Items From Server (if available for the account) to restore items from the hidden Recoverable Items folder back into the mailbox.

If, after these steps, the server itself no longer has the messages (for example, they were removed by the provider or the account was recreated on the server), recovery would require a backup or an older PST/OST copy from before the issue.
