How to move an individual Microsoft 365 subscription into a Microsoft 365 family subscription.

To move from an individual Microsoft 365 subscription (Personal) to a Microsoft 365 Family subscription and keep all OneDrive files:

1. Decide how to switch
   • Switching to a plan with more features (for example, from Microsoft 365 Personal to Microsoft 365 Family) is done by buying the Family subscription on the same Microsoft account that currently has the Personal subscription.
   • Do not change the Microsoft account if the goal is to keep all existing OneDrive files and settings; they are tied to that account.
2. Buy Microsoft 365 Family on the same account
   1. Sign in with the existing subscription account at the Microsoft account services page: https://account.microsoft.com/services.
   2. Purchase Microsoft 365 Family using the same Microsoft account as the current Personal subscription.
   3. When buying, the system treats this as switching to a subscription with more features.
3. What happens to the existing subscription time
   • When switching to a subscription with more features, the remaining days on the current subscription are automatically converted and added to the new Family subscription.
   • For a switch from Microsoft 365 Personal → Microsoft 365 Family, about 92% of the remaining time is added to the new Family plan. The exact number of days depends on how much time was left.
4. OneDrive files and storage
   • OneDrive storage remains associated with the same Microsoft account, so all existing files stay in place and remain accessible.
   • When switching from Personal to Family:
     • The storage size per user does not change, but the number of users who can have that storage increases (up to six people when shared).
   • There is no need to move or re‑sync OneDrive files if the same Microsoft account is used.
5. Share the Family subscription (optional)
   • After the Family subscription is active, it can be shared with up to five other people. Each person gets their own OneDrive storage and apps under their own Microsoft account, but the original account’s OneDrive content remains unchanged.
6. If the subscription was purchased through a third party (Apple App Store, Google Play, etc.)
   • Subscription management (cancelling, renewing, switching plans) may need to be done through that billing partner.
   • Some partners may not support direct switching; in that case, cancel the existing plan with the partner and then buy Microsoft 365 Family directly on the same Microsoft account once the old subscription expires. OneDrive files remain with the account during and after this change.

Following these steps keeps all OneDrive files intact while upgrading from an individual Microsoft 365 subscription to Microsoft 365 Family.
