Best way to transfer server files to a external hdd

Hi

we need to free up some space on our server hard drive. we decided that transfer some older unused files to a physical external hdd and then removing them from the server would be the best option for us. What would the best way to do this? Is it FTP? The dull folder size is 2.5tb and has about 10 folders inside. One subfolder is 1.4tb and the other is 1.1tb. the difference is comprised of the rest. Should i compress them first via "Right click>Send to>compressed folder? or is there a better way to do things?

NOTE: We do not have immediate physical access to the actual server, as it is located in a completely different part of the country.
