Unable to launch zoom on my Windows Lenovo laptop

I have used Zoom regularly for years and yesterday I was no longer able to login. I get a message "try again later" or a code 5003. Every other app on my laptop works fine. Also, my other devices, iPad & iPhone connect to my Zoom account with no problems. I have tried every suggestion found on the internet but none worked. All are using the same network. could it be the laptop security settings? I have reviewed them and saw nothing unusual. And, why only the Zoom app? I have many more that have no problem.

Please try this step: Press Windows + R, type %appdata%\Zoom, and delete the data folder. Relaunch Zoom and see if the problem continues.

Hi! Let me help you with this issue.

The Zoom error code 5003 usually means the Zoom app on your laptop cannot connect to Zoom’s servers. Since Zoom works on your iPad and iPhone using the same network, the problem is likely related to something on the laptop and not your internet connection.

In many cases, this happens because the Windows firewall, antivirus, or network settings are blocking Zoom, or the Zoom app installation became corrupted. You can try checking that Zoom is allowed in the firewall, temporarily disabling any antivirus software, or uninstalling and reinstalling the Zoom app.

The issue is most likely caused by a security setting or a corrupted Zoom installation on the laptop, which prevents the app from connecting properly. Reinstalling Zoom or resetting the network settings often fixes the problem.

Error 5003 in Zoom on a single Windows 11 laptop while other apps and devices work normally is typically caused by how that specific device connects to Zoom (network, proxy, firewall, or security/privacy settings), not by the Zoom account itself.

On Windows 11, start by confirming that system privacy and security settings are not blocking Zoom’s access to required resources like the camera and network:

    1. Check app privacy for camera (Zoom is a desktop app)
      1. Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      2. Under Allow access to the camera on this device, if it is off, select Change and turn Camera access for this device on.
      3. Make sure Let apps access your camera is turned on.
      4. Scroll down and ensure Let desktop apps access your camera is turned on. Zoom is a desktop app and requires this setting.
      5. If antivirus or third‑party security software is installed, ensure it is not blocking camera access for Zoom.
Even though the error is 5003 (connection), if camera access is blocked at the OS level, Zoom can sometimes fail to initialize correctly.
    2. Confirm that no policy is blocking access (if this is a work/managed device)
      1. Still under Privacy & security > Camera, check whether Camera access is greyed out or shows that it is managed by your organization.
      2. If it is restricted and cannot be changed, contact the IT admin for the device, because group policy can block apps like Zoom from using the camera and other resources.
    3. Check that desktop apps in general are allowed to use the camera
      1. Under Privacy & security > Camera, verify again that Let desktop apps access your camera is enabled.
      2. This is required for Internet browsers and video conferencing apps such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams.
    4. Ensure system drivers and Windows are up to date
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      2. Select Check for updates and install all available updates.
      3. Out‑of‑date or incompatible device drivers (especially video drivers and network drivers) can cause apps to fail or behave unexpectedly. Updating Windows also updates many drivers.
    5. If issues persist only with Zoom on this laptop
      1. After confirming privacy and driver updates, uninstall Zoom completely from Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then reinstall the latest version from Zoom’s official site.
      2. If this is a Cloud PC or virtualized environment (Windows 365), ensure the correct Zoom VDI client and plugin are installed as required for that scenario.

If, after these steps, Zoom still shows 5003 only on this laptop while other devices on the same network work, the next likely causes are local firewall rules, VPN, or security software on the laptop specifically blocking Zoom’s traffic. In that case, temporarily disabling or reconfiguring those tools for testing would be the next step.
