I am getting a lot of "Are you trying to sign in?" messages

About 10 times a month I am getting "Are you trying to sign in?" messages, usually from Germany. What if I mistakenly approve this scam? I don't know what they are trying to get into. Is there a more secure way of approving new devices other than this, as someone is trying very hard to scam me.

Unrequested “Are you trying to sign in?” prompts usually mean someone is repeatedly trying to access the account, or has entered the email/phone by mistake.

If an unrequested prompt appears, always select Deny. Without the correct response and explicit approval, the account remains safe, even if attackers know the password.

If one of these prompts is accidentally approved, treat it as a potential account compromise and immediately:

    1. Go to the Microsoft account Security basics page and sign in.
    2. Review the Recent activity for unfamiliar sign-ins and mark anything suspicious as This wasn’t me or Secure your account.
    3. Change the account password to a strong, unique one.
    4. Ensure multi-factor authentication is enabled and security info (phone, alternate email, authenticator app) is up to date.

To further secure the account and handle the frequent prompts:

    1. Regularly review sign-in activity (location, device, browser) and don’t rely only on the location, as mobile IPs can appear from other regions.
    2. Keep multifactor authentication turned on everywhere possible. It blocks most password-based attacks, because attackers usually don’t have the second factor.
    3. If unusual sign-in alerts continue and suspicious activity is found, follow the guidance to secure the account and, if necessary, recover it using the documented account recovery steps.
