Quite a few people have been having similar issues, so my guess it's a bug in a recent update. Please choose Help>Feedback>Report a problem and describe the problem. Submitting sends a bug report to the Word for Mac programming team.

Confirm that Office is fully updated as well. Version 16.107 [depending on which Update Channel you use] is what it should be as of now.

If the problem persists see the Apple KB to Reset the printing system

For further reference: Troubleshoot Printing which contains a link to that article as well.

The behavior matches known Word and macOS issues around saving/printing to PDF on Mac, especially after OS or app updates. Use these workarounds depending on whether Word is running as a desktop app or in a browser.

    1. If using Word for Mac (desktop app)

    a. Save as PDF locally first

    1. Open the .docx in Word for Mac.
    2. Select FileSave As or Save a Copy.
    3. At the bottom of the dialog, select File Format.
    4. Choose PDF.
    5. Change the Where location to a local folder (e.g., Desktop or Documents), not OneDrive or another online location.
    6. Select Save.
    7. Open the saved PDF in Preview or Adobe Reader and print from there.

If saving directly to an online location (such as OneDrive) causes problems or changes the file type, first save locally as above, then manually upload the PDF to OneDrive.

    b. If saving to OneDrive changes the file type There is a known issue where saving as PDF to an online location results in a .docx instead of a PDF. Workarounds:

    1. After saving, rename the file and change the extension from .docx to .pdf.
    2. Or: change the save location to a local folder, save as PDF, then move or upload the PDF to OneDrive.

    c. Alternative PDF creation path If Save As is failing but printing works to virtual printers:

    1. In Word, select FilePrint.
    2. In the printer list, choose Microsoft Print to PDF or another PDF printer if available.
    3. Print to a local file, then open and print that PDF.
    4. If using Word for the web on macOS There is an active issue on macOS where printing from Word for the web can show a blank print preview and not send content to the printer. The recommended workaround is:
    5. In Word for the web, use the option to Download as PDF or Print → choose Save as PDF in the browser dialog.
    6. Open the downloaded PDF in Preview or Adobe Reader.
    7. Print the PDF from there.
    8. General checks after the macOS update If every print attempt from Office apps takes you to a Save dialog instead of printing, confirm that a real printer is selected and not a virtual PDF/XPS printer. If a virtual printer is selected, switch to the physical printer and try again.

If the issue persists only with Office apps after the macOS update, test:

    • A simple text document in another app (e.g., TextEdit) to confirm macOS printing works.
    • A new blank Word document saved as PDF using FileSave AsPDF to see if the problem is document-specific.

If none of the above workarounds restore PDF saving or printing, the next step is to use the Mac’s Preview app or another PDF tool as a temporary workaround: export from Word in any format that works, then convert/print from that other app while monitoring for Office or macOS updates that address the issue.
