My Acrobat does not work.  AcroRd32.exe System Error

Message says: The program can’t start because api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix the problem.

I tried reinstalling the program, but that did not work. What do I do now?

If I could get the file and new where it should be, I could fix it.

    Hi Dave Burson,
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum. I'm happy to help.

The api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll error on Windows 7, particularly with Adobe Acrobat, occurs because this DLL is part of the Windows 8 and above API set not natively supported by Windows 7. The issue is commonly triggered by recent software updates.

Please avoid downloading the DLL from random sites, as they may contain malware and may harm your system.

There're some ideas you might consider:

    • Copy the DLL from Windows 10 to Windows 7. This method cannot ensure the program works as expected. The DLL can be found on: "C:\Windows\system" or "C:\Windows\system32" or "C:\Windows\SysWOW64".
    • Downgrade the program to the version that does not require the DLL.
    • Check if there's an update version that does not require the DLL.
    • Use the extension on your browser instead. Search on the extension store for the keyword "Adobe Acrobat" to install it.
    • Upgrade your Windows 7 to Windows 10/11.

I hope that above information is helpful to you.

The missing api-ms-win-core-winrt-l1-1-0.dll is occurring with Adobe Acrobat Reader on Windows 7. The supported resolution in the provided context is to install an older Acrobat Reader version that still works on Windows 7 and then disable its automatic updates so it does not upgrade to a version that depends on components not available on Windows 7.

Steps based on the referenced guidance:

    1. Uninstall the current Adobe Acrobat Reader from Control Panel → Programs and Features.
    2. Download and install an older, compatible version of Acrobat Reader for Windows 7 (for example, Acrobat Reader XI 11.0.01 as suggested in the reference).
    3. After installation, open services.msc (press Windows key + R, type services.msc, press Enter).
    4. Locate any Adobe update services (for example, Adobe Acrobat Update Service) and set their Startup type to Disabled to prevent automatic updating, which would reintroduce the problem.

This approach avoids manually copying DLL files and instead uses a Reader version that does not require the missing WinRT DLL on Windows 7.
