To restore a deleted touchscreen driver in Windows 11, use Device Manager and Windows Update so Windows can reinstall it automatically.
Important: Do not uninstall or remove drivers this way on Windows Arm-based devices such as Surface Pro X, Surface Pro 9 with 5G, Surface Pro (11th Edition), Surface Laptop (7th Edition), Surface Laptop 13-inch (1st Edition), or Surface Pro 12-inch (1st Edition). On those devices, removing drivers may require a full system reset to restore them.
- Open Device Manager and rescan for the touchscreen
- In the search box on the taskbar, type
device manager, then select Device Manager. - Expand Human Interface Devices.
- If Intel(R) Precise Touch Device or HID-compliant touch screen are missing (because they were deleted), go to the Action menu at the top and select Scan for hardware changes.
- Wait while Windows detects the touchscreen hardware and reinstalls the drivers. If needed, restart the PC.
- In the search box on the taskbar, type
- Make sure Windows Update is installing drivers
- Right-click Start and select Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Under Update options, turn Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows to On.
- Go back to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates. If there is a View optional updates link, open it, select all optional updates (these can include drivers), then select Download and install.
- Restart the device after all updates finish.
- If using a Surface device and touch still does not work
- Open the Surface app (install it from Microsoft Store if needed).
- In Help & support, select Check for updates to open Windows Update and install any Surface drivers and firmware.
- If touch still does not work, follow the guidance in Restore or reset Surface for Windows to use Reset this PC, then test touch again.
- If the touchscreen still does not work
- For Surface devices, follow the steps in Steps to try if your Surface Pen won't ink or write, which includes manually installing Surface touch drivers and firmware.
- For other Windows PCs, after Windows Update and Device Manager rescan, contact the device manufacturer if the touchscreen is still not detected.
After reinstalling, test by opening a browser and trying to scroll, pinch to zoom, swipe from the right, and long-press to confirm touch is working.
