Try right clicking on the document file in the File Explorer and then left click on Properties and if there is an Unblock box in the lower right of the Properties dialog, check that box and click on Apply or OK.

    Hello @Leah ORegan

This message usually appears when the document is either protected with editing restrictions or the permissions are controlled by Information Rights Management (IRM). The steps to change it depend on which protection method is being used.

    1. Check if editing restrictions are enabled

    1. Open the document in Word.
    2. Go to the Review tab.
    3. Select Restrict Editing.
    4. If restrictions are enabled, click Stop Protection at the bottom of the panel.
    5. Enter the password if prompted. -> If you do not know the password, only the person who applied the restriction can remove it.

    2. Check if the document is protected by Information Rights Management (IRM)

If the message indicates the protection is controlled by authentication, it means the file is protected by IRM. In this case:

    1. Go to File > Info.
    2. Check the Protect Document or Restrict Access section.
    3. Only the document owner or the administrator who applied the policy can modify or remove these permissions. -> If you are not the owner, you will need to contact the person who created or protected the document to change the editing permissions.

You can also refer to the following Microsoft documentation for more details about editing restrictions in Word: Allow changes to parts of a protected Word document

If the issue continues, please share a screenshot of the message you are seeing (please remove or mask any personal information before sharing). This could help to check the situation more accurately.

    1. Go to the Review tab. In the Protect group, select Restrict Editing to open the Restrict Editing task pane. At the bottom of the pane, select Stop Protection.
