For personal Microsoft accounts, Microsoft now says you can no longer add a phone number as a new security method. Their current support article states: “For increased security, you can no longer add a phone number” when adding a new way to verify sign-in.

Follow these steps to add a new phone number to the Microsoft account after removing the old one:

    1. Go to the Microsoft account "Your info" page: https://account.live.com/names/manage and sign in.
    2. Under account info, choose Add phone number.
    3. Enter the new phone number and follow the on-screen instructions to verify it (a code will be sent by SMS or call).

If the page does not allow adding the number or shows that the number is already used:

    1. The number may already be associated with another Microsoft account:
      • If the message says the phone number is already a Microsoft account, select Sign up or Sign in as offered and follow the prompts to either:
        • Move the number from the existing account to this one, or
        • Use that number to sign in to the existing account.
      • If the message says the phone number is already used to sign in:
        • If it is an alias on another account owned, select Transfer number and follow the prompts to move it.
        • If Transfer number does not appear, the number was recently used on another account. Select Change number and either:
          • Use a different phone number, or
          • Wait 30 days, then try again to see if Transfer number becomes available.

    Also note:

    • VOIP numbers cannot be added as a way to sign in or receive verification codes.
    • Some organizations restrict which email addresses or numbers can be added.

If sign-in or alias changes are still blocked, use the guided support tool linked from the "Change the email address or phone number for your Microsoft account" article to troubleshoot sign-in and alias issues.
