I would like to know a more definitive answer as to why Smart App Control is choosing to block the program Fortect?

I am new to Windows 11 and I didn't realize that I didn't have any anti-virus/malware protection until today. So, I done a little research and came accross the programs Malwarebytes and Fortect. After download and installation, I opened the programs. Fortect stated that I had about 10 different drivers that needed to be updated. Mind you, even though I have automatic updates on I still manually check every day. Instead of double checking, I started downloading them and they ranged in every department in my computer from the audio and video to the storage, etc. I got 9 of the 10 downloaded and installed and I restarted my desktop. Once I was logged back in, I went back to the Fortect program, and now Smart App Control refuses to let me open it. Should I be worried about the drivers I downloaded, or push for Smart App Control to allow the Fortect program to be allowed? Thanks

I keep all of my software up-to-date, including Windows 11 Pro. It is my understanding, based on advice from both within and outside of Microsoft, that so-called "PC Repair" software is unnecessary. I used to use System Mechanic Pro for a number of years, but ditched it well over a decade ago because I found that the salient "features" it offered were being integrated in the OS itself and in ancillary software packages such as AV and anti-malware suites.

    Hi Matt Howard

Fortect is a piece of unnecessary and potentially dangerous software.
My advice is to avoid that app.

Smart App Control blocks apps that are considered untrusted or potentially unwanted based on Microsoft’s app intelligence and code-signing checks. It is not making a judgment about Fortect by name; it is enforcing a general rule:

    • Apps and binaries are allowed only if they are likely to be safe.
    • Files identified as unsafe by Microsoft’s app intelligence services are blocked unless they are code-signed with a certificate from a trusted certificate authority.
    • Smart App Control is also designed to block potentially unwanted apps (PUAs) such as software that may slow the device, show unexpected ads, or offer extra software or changes that are not clearly requested.

Because Smart App Control cannot be bypassed for a single app, there are only two choices:

    1. Leave Smart App Control on and stop using Fortect.
    2. Turn Smart App Control off entirely if continuing to use Fortect is more important than keeping this protection. This reduces protection and is not recommended unless fully comfortable with the risk.

There is no indication in the provided information that the drivers already installed are automatically unsafe, but Smart App Control’s behavior is a signal to be cautious about allowing further changes from that tool. For driver and device updates, Windows Update and the device manufacturer’s official tools are the recommended sources.

Key points from Smart App Control behavior relevant to this case:

    • It blocks apps that are malicious, untrusted, or potentially unwanted, including those that might slow the device or do unexpected things.
    • It relies on AI and cloud-based reputation plus valid code signatures.
    • There is currently no way to create an exception for a single blocked app; only turning Smart App Control off is possible.

    Hi Matt,

I’m reaching out from the Fortect team to provide a technical perspective on why Smart App Control (SAC) is flagging the application and to address your concerns.

    Why Fortect is being flagged

Smart App Control is an AI-driven "reputation" filter. It blocks apps that haven't yet built enough "trust" in Microsoft’s cloud. We recently released a new version with an updated digital signature; because this specific binary is brand new, SAC defaults to a block until it gathers more telemetry.

This is a common occurrence for new releases and usually resolves itself within a few days.

    Our Credibility & Safety

Fortect is a verified, safe utility. We hold memberships and certifications with major industry bodies to ensure the highest standards:

    • Microsoft Virus Initiative (MVI): We collaborate with Microsoft to meet their security and performance requirements.
    • AMTSO Member: We adhere to the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization’s transparency guidelines.
    • Independent Certification: Our software is regularly vetted by labs like AV-TEST and VB100.

If you'd like us to verify anything or if you have further questions, our support team is available to help you directly.

    Best,

    Jason
