Suddenly the camera on my HP Omnibook 5 Laptop does not work. It is not blocked, and I am told to find some switch. I cannot find anything like that.

Try these steps in order on the HP Omnibook 5 running Windows 11:

    1. Check for a physical camera control Even if it is hard to see, many laptops have:
      • A sliding switch on the side of the laptop
      • A function key (F1–F12) with a camera icon that toggles the webcam (often used with the Fn key)
      • A tiny slider/shutter built into the camera bezel above the screen Make sure any such switch/slider is set to “open” and that any camera function key is set to enable the camera.
    2. Test the camera in the Windows Camera app
      1. Select Start > Camera.
      2. Check if the preview works.
      • If it works here but not in other apps, the problem is with those apps’ settings.
    3. Check for Windows and driver updates
      1. Select Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      2. If nothing appears for the camera, go to Advanced options > Optional updates and look for any camera/webcam driver updates. Install what is offered.
      3. Restart the PC via Start > Power > Restart (do not just wake from sleep).
      4. Test again with the Camera app.
    4. Run the Camera troubleshooter
      1. Select Start > Settings > System.
      2. Select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      3. Find Camera and select Run.
      4. Apply any fixes it suggests and restart if requested.
    5. Reinstall or switch the camera driver
      1. Open Device Manager (search for “device manager” from Start).
      2. Under Cameras (or Imaging devices), right‑click the laptop camera and select Properties.
      3. On the Driver tab, select Uninstall Device and check Delete the driver software for this device, then select OK.
      4. In Device Manager, open the Action menu and select Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver.
      5. Restart the PC and test the Camera app.
If the camera still misbehaves and it is a USB webcam or UVC‑compatible device:
      1. In Device Manager, right‑click the webcam and select Update driver.
      2. Select Browse my computer for drivers.
      3. Select Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer.
      4. Choose USB Video Device and select Next.
      5. Close Device Manager and test again.

If none of these steps restore the camera, check HP’s support page for the Omnibook 5 for a specific webcam driver or hardware diagnostics, as the issue may be hardware‑related.

That worked. I found a very small sliding switch above the small camera lens at the top of the laptop screen.
