A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Copilot in OneNote is only available when certain requirements are met and the app is up to date. Use the steps below to get it working.
- Confirm the right subscription/license
- For home use, the account must have a Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription with Copilot Pro, or a Microsoft 365 Copilot Business subscription.
- For business use, the account must have a Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Business Standard, Business Premium, E3, E5, F1, or F3 subscription and a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
- Make sure the account shown at the top of the OneNote window (and under File > Account) is the one with the Copilot license.
- Make sure OneNote is updated
- On Windows or Mac, install the latest Office/OneNote updates. In any Microsoft 365 app go to File > Account and use the update options described in Install Office updates or the Mac equivalent.
- Refresh the license in the apps
- In any Microsoft 365 app (Word, Excel, etc.):
- Go to File > Account.
- Select Update License.
- Close and restart all Microsoft 365 apps, including OneNote.
- In any Microsoft 365 app (Word, Excel, etc.):
- Check update channel and privacy settings (business devices)
- If using a business device on Windows:
- Copilot features are not available on the Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel. The device must be on Current Channel or Monthly Enterprise Channel. If “Semi-Annual Enterprise Channel” appears under File > Account > Product Information, contact the organization’s IT/admin to move to the correct channel.
- Under File > Account > Account Privacy > Manage Settings, ensure:
- Experiences that analyze your content is turned on.
- All connected experiences is turned on.
- If using a business device on Windows:
- Where Copilot appears in OneNote when enabled
- Windows, Mac, web, and Teams: Copilot is on the Home tab as a Copilot button that opens the Copilot pane for summaries, task lists, and idea generation.
- On-canvas icon (Windows): clicking on the OneNote page surface shows a Copilot icon to quickly create summaries, rewrites, task lists, and new content.
- “Take notes with Copilot” (OneNote for Microsoft 365 / web): on a blank page in a personal cloud-synced notebook, click the Copilot icon on the page to open the Take notes with Copilot box and start prompting.
- Additional OneNote-specific requirements
- For “Take notes with Copilot” in OneNote on Windows:
- A Copilot license (work or home) is required.
- A personal notebook stored in the cloud and not shared with anyone else is required.

If, after confirming the license, updating Office/OneNote, refreshing the license, and enabling connected experiences, the Copilot button still does not appear, contact the organization’s IT admin (for business accounts) or Microsoft support, as the rollout may not yet be completed for that tenant or region.
