How do I do a clean reinstall of Windows 11, or at least reset it?

I run Windows 11 Pro on a Dell Inspiron laptop. My system is acting up, and I'm running from my restore drive. How do I trigger either an in-place reinstallation or a system reset?

On a Dell system, you have 3 options.

    1

Start your laptop, then on the Dell logo screen, repeatedly press F12, then on the resulting menu, select Dell Support Assist.

IN there, you can use the Dell Factory reset option.

However, this process will reset your system to how it was when you purchased it and the Windows version installed would not be fully up to date.

    2

    A Windows Reset.

You can choose to keep your files or delete everything, but you will need to reinstall all your software.

On your Start Menu, click the Power Button, then press Shift while clicking Restart.

Your laptop will boot into the recovery environment and you can start a Windows Reset from there.

    3

If the Reset operation fails, then you can create a bootable Windows 11 USB on an empty 8GB USB flash drive, boot your laptop from that and clean install Windows

    Click this link:  https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows11

to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can create a bootable USB flash drive (min 8GB) using that tool.

Then, Boot your PC from the Installation Media you just created to begin installing Windows 11 (F12 on the Dell logo screen to boot from the USB).

During the installation process skip the steps which ask for a product key and select the option 'I am Reinstalling Windows 11 on this PC'.

To repair or reset Windows 11 on the Dell Inspiron, there are two main options: Reset this PC (from within Windows/Recovery) and a clean reinstall using installation media.

    1. Try Reset this PC (keeps files or removes everything)

Reset reinstalls Windows and can fix many software issues.

    Before starting:

    • Back up important files.
    • If BitLocker/device encryption is on, ensure the BitLocker recovery key is available. See: "Find your BitLocker recovery key" in the referenced article.

Steps (from Windows or Windows Recovery Environment):

    1. Open Settings > System > Recovery.
    2. Under Recovery options, select Reset this PC.
    3. Choose one of:
      • Keep my files (refresh): reinstalls Windows, removes apps and settings, keeps personal files.
      • Remove everything (reset): reinstalls Windows and removes all files, apps, and settings.
    4. Choose source:
      • Cloud download: downloads a fresh copy of Windows from Microsoft (latest version; uses more data).
      • Local reinstall: uses files already on the PC (faster, but may not include latest updates).
    5. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the reset.

    Notes:

    • Keep my files preserves personal data but removes apps and settings.
    • Remove everything is recommended if planning to sell/donate the PC or if corruption is severe.

Details of reset options are described in the "Reset your PC" article.

    2. Clean reinstall using Windows installation media

Use this if Windows is too damaged, the reset fails, or a completely fresh start is desired.

2.1. Prepare installation media on a working PC

    1. On a working PC, use the Media Creation Tool to create the installation media for Windows on a USB drive or DVD. See: "create the installation media for Windows" in the referenced article.
    2. Safely eject the USB/DVD.

2.2. Boot the Dell from the installation media

    1. Connect the USB/DVD to the Dell.
    2. Power on and boot from the USB/DVD (use Dell’s boot menu key or BIOS settings as documented by Dell).
    3. When Windows 11 Setup appears:
      • Select language and localization, then Next.
      • Select keyboard layout, then Next.
      • Choose Install Windows 11.
      • Accept that everything will be deleted if doing a clean install.

    2.3. Product key and edition

    1. If prompted for a Product key:
      • Select I don't have a product key.
    2. In Select Image, choose the edition that matches the existing license (for example, Pro if currently running Pro). The edition must match the digital license.
    3. After reinstall, Windows normally activates automatically when online, using the digital license linked to the device/Microsoft account.

2.4. Delete partitions and install (full clean install)

Warning: This removes all data, apps, and settings on the selected disk.

    1. In Applicable notices and license terms, select Accept.
    2. In Select location to install Windows 11:
      • On Disk 0, delete all partitions that are not already Unallocated Space by selecting each and choosing Delete Partition.
      • Do not modify or delete partitions on any other disks (e.g., Disk 1), if present.
    3. When only Disk 0 Unallocated Space remains, select it and click Next.
    4. In Ready to install, select Install.
    5. The PC will restart several times while Windows installs.
    6. After installation, complete the setup wizard and sign in with the Microsoft account so the digital license can be applied.

    3. Activation and license considerations

    • After reinstall, Windows should activate automatically when online if the edition matches the existing digital license.
    • If Windows does not activate after a significant hardware change (for example, motherboard replacement), use the Activation troubleshooter as described in the activation article.
    • Ensure the Windows digital license is linked to a Microsoft account before reinstalling, as described in "Link your Windows digital license to your Microsoft account".

    4. When to choose which option

    • Use Reset this PC > Keep my files first if the system still boots and data should be preserved.
    • Use Reset this PC > Remove everything if a full wipe is acceptable but using the existing recovery image.
    • Use clean install with installation media if:
      • Reset fails or is unavailable.
      • System files are heavily corrupted.
      • A completely fresh OS with no old partitions is desired.
