Microsoft Word and other Microsoft 365 apps can show “not connected to the internet” even when the device is online if either:
- Office cannot reach Microsoft’s online services, or
- Windows is not correctly detecting the internet connection.
Use these steps to resolve the issue and continue using Microsoft products:
- Confirm Windows sees an internet connection
- On the taskbar, select the network/Wi‑Fi icon.
- If it shows No Internet, follow the Windows Wi‑Fi troubleshooting steps:
- Turn Wi‑Fi off and back on, then reconnect.
- Open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
-
ipconfig /release
-
ipconfig /renew
-
ipconfig /flushdns
- Check proxy settings: Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy and turn off any manual proxy if not required.
- Verify the IP address is not in the form
169.254.x.x; if it is, enable DHCP on the router so the PC can get a valid IP.
These steps address cases where the PC is on Wi‑Fi but has limited connectivity and cannot actually reach the internet.
- Check that Microsoft 365 can reach activation and subscription services
Microsoft 365 desktop apps do not need to be online all the time, but they must periodically contact Microsoft services to:
- Activate the apps the first time.
- Keep the subscription in good standing.
- Install or update Office.
If the apps cannot reach Microsoft’s servers for an extended period (for example, more than 39 days), they can enter reduced functionality mode and show connection or licensing errors. Once the internet connection is working correctly, open Word and sign in again so it can reactivate.
- Verify that the issue is not just with online content
For older Office versions (such as Office 2007/2010), messages about troubleshooting the internet connection can appear when the app cannot reach online templates or Help content, even though offline features still work.
- Press F1 in Word to open Help.
- In the Help window, at the bottom-right, open Connection Status and select Show content only from this computer.
- This forces Word to use offline Help and templates that are installed locally.
- When online access is stable again, switch back to Show content from Office.com (or Show content from Office Online in Office 2007).
- If updates are failing with a connection error
If Word or other Office apps show update errors (for example, error 30180‑28) that mention internet or network problems:
- Save work and close all programs.
- Restart the computer.
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to File > Account (or Office Account).
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If using Wi‑Fi, try connecting the device with a wired Ethernet cable and repeat the update.
- If Microsoft 365 still reports no internet
If Windows can browse the web normally but Microsoft 365 apps still claim there is no connection or cannot activate, the Windows Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) may not be correctly detecting the internet:
- Check that NCSI can resolve and reach Microsoft’s test endpoints (for example,
dns.msftncsi.com and the msftconnecttest.com HTTP probe URLs) as described in the NCSI troubleshooting steps.
- If NCSI is not registering the internet connection, configure it to use GlobalDNS by creating the
UseGlobalDNS registry value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows\NetworkConnectivityStatusIndicator and setting it to 1, then try activating Microsoft 365 again.
- Back up the registry before editing it, as incorrect changes can affect system behavior.
After completing these steps, Word and other Microsoft 365 apps should recognize the internet connection and function normally. If the apps had gone into reduced functionality mode due to lack of connectivity, reconnect to the internet and sign in to Microsoft 365 to restore full functionality.
