Look at the function keys (F1 - F12) on your keyboard, if one of them has a camera icon, press that key or Fn + that key to unlock the webcam.

    2

If that was not the problem, look at the camera lens above your screen, is there a small privacy slider that needs to be opened to access the webcam?

    3

If the webcam is still not working, go to the support page for your laptop on the manufacturers website, then from there, download and re-install the version of webcam drivers they provide.

If you have any difficulty locating that support page, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

Follow these steps on the Windows 11 laptop to fix common camera errors.

    1. Run the built-in Camera troubleshooter
    2. Select Start > Settings > System.
    3. Scroll down and select Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
    4. Find Camera and select Run.
    5. Apply any fixes it suggests and restart the device if prompted.

Alternatively, open the Get Help app and run the automated camera troubleshooter from there: Run the troubleshooter in Get Help

    1. Check physical camera controls
    2. If using a laptop, look for a camera key on the keyboard (often one of the F-keys) that may need to be pressed, sometimes with Fn.
    3. Check for a hardware camera switch on the laptop edges.
    4. Check the camera area for a privacy slider/shutter and slide it open.
    5. Verify the camera is connected (for external webcams)
    6. Unplug and firmly reconnect the camera to a USB port.
    7. Try a different USB port.
    8. Test the camera on another device to rule out hardware failure.
    9. Update the camera driver
    10. Select Start > Device Manager.
    11. Expand Cameras.
    12. Right-click the camera and select Update driver.
    13. Select Search automatically for drivers.
    14. When the update completes, restart the PC.
    15. Reinstall the camera driver (if detection errors occur, such as 0x80070490 or 0x80004005)
    16. Open Device Manager and expand Cameras.
    17. Right-click the camera and select Uninstall device.
    18. If available, check Delete the driver software for this device, then select Uninstall.
    19. Restart the PC so Windows reinstalls the default driver automatically.
    20. After restart, in Device Manager, right-click the camera again and select Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
    21. If the camera app freezes, crashes, or does not open
    22. Close unnecessary apps to free memory.
    23. Restart the PC.
    24. Then repeat the Update the camera driver steps above.
    25. If a specific error code appears
    • 0xA00F4246 (camera locked by security software)
      1. Open the antivirus or firewall app from Start.
      2. In its Settings/Tools/Protection area, temporarily disable or pause protection for a short time (for example, 10 minutes).
      3. Test the camera.
      4. Re-enable protection and ensure the antivirus is updated.
    • 0x80070490 or 0x80004005 (device detection error)
      1. Run the Camera troubleshooter as in step 1.
      2. If not fixed, perform the Reinstall the camera driver steps in section 5.

If the camera still shows only a black image after these steps and the device has a function-key camera toggle or privacy slider, verify again that it is fully enabled, as this is a common cause on laptops.
