When playing a video in Win 11 Media Player, the control bar doesn't go away. If I run the mouse down it will go away just for that instance but I can't find any info on that issue.

I have included a screenshot

Thank you Norma C

For stuck playback controls in Windows 11 Media Player, use the standard Windows Media Player troubleshooting steps for playback problems:

    1. Close Media Player.
    2. Clear the Media Player database (in case the UI state is corrupted):
      • Press Windows + R.
      • Enter %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Media Player\ and select OK.
      • Delete all files in that folder (do not delete the folder itself).
      • Start Media Player again and test.
    3. Update device drivers that affect playback UI and video rendering:
      • Install the latest graphics drivers from the PC or GPU manufacturer.
      • Install the latest audio drivers from the sound device/PC manufacturer.
    4. Check Windows system files:
      • Open Command Prompt as administrator.
      • Run sfc /scannow and let it complete, then restart and test Media Player.
    5. Run the built‑in Windows Media Player troubleshooter:
      • Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
      • Run Windows Media Player troubleshooter and apply any fixes it suggests.
    6. Repair or reset Media Player:
      • Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
      • Find Windows Media Player, select the three dots > Advanced options.
      • First choose Repair and test; if the issue persists, choose Reset (this removes custom settings but not media files).
    7. If the problem continues, reinstall Media Player:
      • Open Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
      • Clear Media Features, select OK, and restart.
      • Return to the same dialog, re‑enable Media Features, select OK, and restart again.

These steps address corrupted player data, driver issues, and app corruption that can cause abnormal playback UI behavior such as controls not auto‑hiding.

    Hi Norma,

Thank you for posting your question here!

Thanks for sharing the image this helps a lot and I get how annoying it is. What the screenshot shows is the Windows 11 Media Player stuck in windowed overlay mode, so the transport controls do not auto hide unless the hide timer is manually reset which is why it disappears only when you move the mouse down briefly. This usually happens when the video is maximized instead of running in true full screen or when the player UI state gets stuck after an update. From a practical standpoint pressing F11 to enter true full screen or double clicking directly on the video frame usually resolves it. If it keeps happening repairing the Media Player app from Windows Settings often recalibrates the overlay behavior. This is a known product gap rather than a user error and you are not doing anything wrong.

If you’d like this behavior to change, you can submit feedback through the Feedback Hub app by pressing Windows + F. With enough upvotes, it may get Microsoft’s attention and lead to more options in future updates.

Let me know if you need further assistance, feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thank you and I appreciate your effort.

    Regards,

    Angelique P.

    Hi ******@outlook.com .

Thanks for posting here in Microsoft Community,I understand that you’re experiencing an issue where the control bar in Windows 11 Media Player does not automatically hide during video playback.

You’re not imagining it. this is a known issue in the new Windows 11 Media Player where in some builds and the playback controls don’t reliably auto‑hide during video playback. The control bar can stay visible and disappear only after you move the mouse once or even come back and get stuck. It happens most often in windowed mode or though some people see it in fullscreen too. Using true fullscreen by pressing F11 or double‑clicking the video can help and it’s also worth checking the Media Player playback settings to make sure nothing is forcing the controls to stay visible, since some updates reset that behavior unexpectedly.

Also, may I know if this happens with all video files or only specific ones?

If you still needed further assistance or you still have any more question feel free to comment I'll be happy to assist you.

    Best regards,

    April P.
