Windows VPN stuck on "connecting"

I work a lot with remote windows servers where we access SQL Server databases.

We access through VPN configured in Windows itself.

It happens very often that if for some reason the VPN cannot connect, it stays in the "...connecting..." state and there is no way to deactivate this situation.

No one ever knew how to tell me which process can be disabled in the Windows task manager to disable it.

Sometimes the problem of lack of connection originates from the remote server but even if this is solved afterwards, our PC remains "connecting..." forever.

The only solution is to reboot the system.

    Hello there,

    Have you checked the Event Viewer for any trace?

    Can you share the exact error message or Event ID you are getting?

    If you cannot find anything in Event Viewer I would suggest you use tools like Procmon to find the root cause for this behaviour.

    Sometimes with an application-based VPN if the session is not terminated correctly you might face this issue.

    In cmd:

    ipconfig /release

    ipconfig /renew

    The workaround is also to launch the VPN connection from the Windows VPN Settings window instead of from System Tray.

    In the Windows Search Bar, type "VPN", click "VPN Settings" to open the VPN Settings window. Select the VPN that you want to connect to and click "Connect."
