Microsoft 365 features that help users manage their subscriptions, account settings, and billing information.
Hi Steve Kremer,
I understand why you’d want to switch ownership, especially when circumstances change. With Microsoft 365 Family, though, the subscription itself is tied to the Microsoft account that originally purchased it, and Microsoft doesn’t currently offer a way to transfer ownership to another account while it’s active.
What usually works instead is transitioning ownership at the next renewal:
- The current owner can turn off recurring billing so the subscription naturally expires at the end of the current billing period.
- After it expires, the family member who will take over can purchase a new Microsoft 365 Family subscription using their own Microsoft account.
- From there, they can share the subscription again with the rest of the family, just as before.
While this isn’t a direct transfer, it’s the supported way to move ownership from one family member to another.
In terms of data, each person’s OneDrive files are associated with their own Microsoft account, not the subscription owner. So as long as everyone continues using the same accounts, their files remain safe. The main impact of a short gap would be a temporary loss of premium features, not data loss.
If helpful, I’m happy to go over how to turn off recurring billing or talk through the timing so the transition is as smooth as possible.
