Even though I have entered the correct installation ID using the Product Activation Portal, the message "Sorry, we were unable to verify your installation ID." appears and I cannot activate Windows.

    Hello.

I suggest you should verify your current setup, open an elevated Command Prompt and run the command slmgr.vbs /dli to ensure the Product Key Channel aligns with the key you are trying to activate.

Since the web portal is being stubborn, I recommend running the command slui 4 from your Start menu to open the offline activation wizard, which generates a fresh ID specifically for telephone-based verification. This method is often more reliable because it gives a direct handshake with the Microsoft licensing servers rather than relying on a browser that might have expired.

In cases where you have recently swapped out major hardware like a motherboard, clicking the "I changed hardware on this device recently" link within that same menu is usually the most effective way to re-link your digital license without needing a manual ID entry at all.

The Product Activation Portal error indicates that the installation ID cannot be validated through that channel. Use one of the supported activation paths instead and, if needed, fall back to phone activation or the Activation troubleshooter.

    1. Confirm Windows 10 activation status
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • Check the activation state and whether a specific error code is shown. If an error code is present, follow the guidance in Get help with Windows activation errors linked from the activation article.
    2. Try standard online activation
      • Ensure the device is connected to the internet.
      • In Settings > Update & Security > Activation, select Activate (or Troubleshoot if available) to let Windows attempt activation directly against Microsoft’s activation servers instead of via the Product Activation Portal.
    3. Use the Windows Activation troubleshooter (Windows 10/11)
      • If Windows shows as not activated and the Troubleshoot button is visible:
        1. Select Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
        2. Run the Activation troubleshooter.
      • The troubleshooter can automatically fix some common activation issues. If it cannot, use the link in the troubleshooter page to contact support.
    4. Activate by phone instead of the portal If the portal cannot verify the installation ID, use the built‑in phone activation flow:
      • Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
      • Under Activate Windows now, select Activate by phone (if present) and follow the prompts.
      • If Activate by phone is not shown:
        1. Press Windows logo key + R.
        2. Type slui 4 and select OK.
        3. Choose the correct location from the list and select Next.
        4. Call one of the phone numbers displayed and follow the automated instructions to enter the installation ID and receive a confirmation ID.
        5. If the automated system cannot complete activation, remain on the line to be connected to support for your region.
    5. Check for common causes if activation still fails If activation continues to fail (online, portal, or phone), verify the following typical causes:
      • The product key is invalid for the edition installed or has been used on more devices than allowed.
      • A different version/edition of Windows was installed during repair or reinstall.
      • The key is from counterfeit software.
      • The PC is pre‑owned and the seller reused the key on multiple devices.
      • Significant hardware changes (for example, motherboard replacement) have invalidated the previous activation; in that case, use the Activation troubleshooter and, if needed, contact support to review the license.

If none of the above resolves the issue, use the phone activation flow (slui 4) and work with the support agent you are routed to; they can check the key and installation ID and advise whether a new product key is required.
