A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
To get the latest Word and Excel with an active Microsoft 365 subscription, Office 2010 does not need to be updated; instead, install the Microsoft 365 apps (which include the current Word and Excel) on the Windows PC.
Follow these steps:
- Check Windows support
- If the PC is on Windows 10, be aware that support for Windows 10 ends October 14, 2025. Microsoft 365 Apps will still get security updates on Windows 10 until October 10, 2028, but upgrading to Windows 11 is recommended to avoid performance and reliability issues over time.
- If the PC is on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, Microsoft 365 Apps will no longer receive updates. In that case, upgrade Windows to a supported version first.
- Install the latest Office (Word/Excel) from Microsoft 365
- Use the steps in Download, install or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office on a PC or Mac to install the current Microsoft 365 apps on the computer. This will give the latest Word and Excel versions included with the subscription.
- When running setup on a PC that already has Office 2010, the installer typically removes the older version automatically. If there are errors, uninstall Office 2010 first using the standard uninstall steps, then reinstall Microsoft 365.
- After installation
- The new Word and Excel will update automatically. If needed, updates can be checked and applied manually using the steps in How to update Microsoft 365 or Office for Windows.
There is no separate “Word and Excel 2026” product to download. The Microsoft 365 subscription provides continuously updated versions of Word and Excel through the install process above, and the subscription is already valid through 2026.
