If your laptop originally came with Windows 11 Home, that license is permanently tied to your device. It doesn’t expire, and upgrading to Pro doesn’t remove it.

You won’t be able to use that Home license on another device as it stays with your laptop, but you can always get it back anytime. Even if you don’t have the product key, Windows will automatically reactivate Home as soon as you reinstall it and go online.

In your case, since the Pro key didn’t activate, nothing really changed, you still have your original Windows 11 Home license ready to use.

    Hi, good day!

I'll be asking a few questions so I can have a better idea what solutions to provide.

    • What edition does it show now under Settings > System > Activation? (Home or Pro?)
    • Where did the Windows 11 Pro key your friend shared come from? (retail purchase, company license?)
    • Was your Windows 11 Home activated properly before you entered the Pro key?
    • Are you connected to the internet when trying to activate?
    • Are you just trying to go back to Home edition?

I look forward to your update and am happy to continue working with you until the issue is resolved. Please keep me posted by clicking "Add comment" below instead of selecting Yes or No.

Error 0x800705B4 is a generic timeout error that can appear when trying to change editions or activate Windows.

To get back to a working, activated Windows 11 Home state, follow these steps:

    1. Confirm the current edition and activation state
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      2. At the top, check which edition is installed (Home or Pro) and what the Activation state shows.
    2. If Windows 11 Home is still installed If the edition still shows Windows 11 Home and activation failed only for the Pro key:
      1. In System > Activation, select Change product key.
      2. Enter the original Windows 11 Home product key if available, or use the option to troubleshoot activation.
      3. If there is a digital license for Home tied to the device, the Activation troubleshooter can help:
        • Go to Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot.
        • Run the activation troubleshooter and choose Activate Windows if offered.
    3. If Windows 11 Pro is installed but there is only a Home license If the edition now shows Windows 11 Pro but the device only has a digital license for Windows 11 Home, Windows will not activate in this state. In that case, to use the existing Home license:
      1. Go to the media creation tool page.
      2. Follow the instructions there to create installation media and perform a clean installation of Windows 11 Home.
      3. During setup, skip entering a product key. After installation, Windows 11 Home should automatically activate using the digital license for Home.
    4. If there is a valid Pro key If the Pro key is valid and matches the installed edition, try again:
      1. Start > Settings > System > Activation.
      2. Select Change product key and enter the 25-character Windows 11 Pro key.
      3. Select Next to start the upgrade/activation.

If the key from the friend is not genuine, blocked, or for the wrong edition (for example, Enterprise or volume license), Windows 11 Pro will not activate. In that case, the reliable way back to an activated system is to reinstall or return to Windows 11 Home as described above so it can use the original Home digital license.
