I am trying to launch a game, and when I start it, it says, "your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened." And it won't let me launch the game.

    Hi,

What game is it? Be careful when configuring and accessing downloads for game software from unknown categories, as this can pose a security issue to your PC.

    1. Press Windows + R and type inetcpl.cpl in the Run dialog box to open Internet Properties.
    2. Next, in the Internet Properties window, switch to the Security tab. Click on the Custom level button there.
    3. Next, in the Security Settings – Internet Zone window shown below, scroll down and look for the Launching applications and unsafe files setting.

This setting might be set to Disable, and this is the root cause of the issue.

Set it to the Prompt (recommended) option and click OK, Apply, OK.

    1. Finally, reboot your computer. After restarting, you should be able to open the file without any warning messages.

If possible, verify that the game is being downloaded from reputable publishers or stores.

The message usually means Windows Attachment Manager or Internet Explorer security settings are blocking the game’s files. Adjust the Internet security settings and, if needed, Attachment Manager policy.

    1. Enable file downloads in Internet security settings
      1. Press Win + R, type inetcpl.cpl, and press Enter to open Internet Properties.
      2. Go to the Security tab.
      3. Select the Internet zone (globe icon), then click Custom level.
      4. In Security Settings:
        • Scroll to Downloads > File download and select Enable.
        • Scroll to Miscellaneous > Launching applications and unsafe files and select Prompt (recommended).
      5. Click OK, then OK again, and try launching the game.
    2. If antivirus is blocking the game If the game’s executable is being blocked as “unsafe” or “virus detected,” this is typically from antivirus, not Windows itself.
      • Temporarily disable real-time scanning only if the game is from a trusted source.
      • Launch the game to confirm it works.
      • Re‑enable antivirus immediately afterward.
    3. Adjust Attachment Manager policy (advanced) If downloads or game files are still blocked, adjust the Attachment Manager registry setting. Warning: Incorrect registry edits can cause system problems. Back up the registry first.
      1. Press Win + R, type regedit.exe, and press Enter.
      2. Navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Attachments
      3. If Attachments does not exist:
        • Right‑click Policies > New > Key, name it Attachments.
      4. In Attachments, right‑click in the right pane > New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
      5. Name it ScanWithAntiVirus and press Enter.
      6. Set its value according to the behavior desired by your security policy (for example, some admins set this when troubleshooting antivirus scan failures).
      7. Close Registry Editor and restart the PC, then try the game again.

If the game still will not launch after these steps, check the game’s own launcher or installer for additional security prompts or blocks.
