I have an HP EliteBook personal laptop running Windows. After entering my login password, the screen keeps blinking and does not load Windows. When I tried Startup Repair through Advanced Options, it brought me to a BitLocker recovery screen asking for a 48-digit recovery key. I do not have the recovery key. I checked my Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey and the key is not listed there. I also checked with the admin and there is not record of it. I cannot reset the laptop as I have important data on it that I cannot afford to lose. I need help retrieving my BitLocker recovery key associated with my Microsoft account

If your drive is encrypted with Bitlocker, the only place the Bitlocker Recovery key is automatically stored is on the associated Microsoft account on the link below, be sure to check any Microsoft account that may have been used on the PC and also any work or school account that may be linked to the PC.

(Note, even if your device does not show on the Microsoft account, the Bitlocker Recovery Key may still be available on this link)

Are you able to find the Bitlocker Recovery Key on any account that may have been used or linked to the laptop?

If not, do you have a safe backup of your files, or use a cloud service like OneDrive to sync your files online.

The BitLocker recovery key can only be obtained from where it was originally backed up. If it is not in any of those locations, it cannot be recreated or retrieved by Microsoft or anyone else.

Important facts and options based on the described situation:

    1. Microsoft cannot provide or recreate a lost BitLocker key
      • Microsoft Support does not have the ability to retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key.
    2. Places to check for the recovery key Since the key is not shown under the Microsoft account at account.microsoft.com/devices/recoverykey and the admin has no record, every other possible backup location must be checked:
      • Work or school account (if the device was ever joined to an organization)
        1. From another device, go to https://aka.ms/aadrecoverykey.
        2. Sign in with the work or school account that might have been used on the device.
        3. Select Devices, expand the affected device, and choose View BitLocker Keys.
        4. Match the first 8 digits of the recovery key ID shown on the BitLocker screen with the key listed there.
        5. Use the corresponding 48‑digit key to unlock the drive.
      • Printed copy
        • Check any printed documents saved when BitLocker was first enabled. The printout contains the Key ID and the 48‑digit recovery key.
      • USB flash drive
        • If the key was saved to a USB drive, plug that USB into another computer and look for a text file containing the recovery key.
      • Microsoft Entra ID / AD DS (enterprise/organization scenario)
        • If the device is or was managed by an organization, the recovery key may be stored in Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory Domain Services. Only the organization’s IT helpdesk/administrator can retrieve it.
    3. Using the key once found
      • On the BitLocker recovery screen, type the 48‑digit recovery key (hyphens are optional). If correct, Windows will start normally.
    4. If the recovery key truly cannot be found
      • If the key is not in any Microsoft account (personal or work/school), not printed, not on a USB drive, and not stored by an organization’s IT, there is no supported way to bypass BitLocker.
      • The only remaining option is to reset the device using Windows recovery options. This will remove all files on the encrypted drive because BitLocker is specifically designed to prevent access without the recovery key.

There is no supported method to decrypt or access the data on a BitLocker‑protected drive without the correct recovery key or a valid key protector.
