I cannot create a new Dev Box via devportal.microsoft.com

I've been using dev box for over two years now. Logging back into the dev portal I now notice that I no longer have the option to create a new dev box. The 'New Environment' button simply does not show it anymore. Anyone know why this is? I know about the change to Windows 365 Cloud PC but the docs state that existing users can continue to use the service.

Turns out it was a license problem. One need for instance an intune license and that had expired for this particular user

    Hello Erwin Staal,

The disappearance of the “New Environment” option in the Dev Portal is not a bug but a result of Microsoft’s service transition. As of November 2025, Dev Box stopped onboarding new customers, and the portal UI was updated to remove the creation entry point. Existing tenants who already had Dev Boxes deployed can continue to use and scale them, but creating new Dev Boxes in additional tenants now requires submitting a request through Azure Support to have those tenants allowlisted. Microsoft is consolidating developer environments into Windows 365 Cloud PC, which is where new features and GPU-backed configurations are being delivered.

If you are logging in with the same tenant that previously had Dev Boxes, you should still be able to manage and use existing environments. If you need new Dev Boxes, the supported path is either requesting tenant allowlisting via Azure Support or migrating to Windows 365 Cloud PC, which is the long-term platform for developer workloads. This change is documented in Microsoft’s Dev Box and Windows 365 update notes, and it explains why the “New Environment” button has disappeared.

    Hello Erwin,

the absence of the "New dev box" option in the developer portal is not an indicator that the Microsoft Dev Box service has been discontinued for existing users.

Here are the supported reasons this typically occurs and what to check:

    1. Dev Box creation is scoped to projects and pools: Microsoft Dev Box creation is tied to a Dev Box project and at least one dev box pool. If no project or pool is visible to your account, the developer portal will not present an option to create a new dev box. This most commonly happens when:

    • The project or pool was deleted
    • Your access to the project was removed
    • You are signed into a different tenant or directory than before

    2. Required role assignment To create a dev box, your account must be assigned the DevCenter Dev Box User role on the project. If this role assignment is missing or was changed, the create option will not appear in the portal.

    3. Developer portal experience The developer portal surfaces creation options only when eligible projects and pools are available to the signed-in user. When those prerequisites are not met, the portal may show only existing environments or no creation entry points at all. This behavior is consistent with documented access and scoping requirements.

    4. Windows 365 Cloud PC clarification Microsoft Dev Box continues to be supported, and Microsoft documentation does not state that existing users lose access by default due to Windows 365 Cloud PC changes. Dev Box and Windows 365 Cloud PC are related offerings but are managed and licensed separately. Lack of a create option is not documented as part of a service transition.

    Recommended next steps

    • Confirm you are signed into the correct tenant and directory.
    • Ask your administrator to verify that:
      • A Dev Box project and dev box pool still exist
        • You are assigned the DevCenter Dev Box User role on the project
    • After access is confirmed, sign out and sign back in to refresh the session.
