Prevent MS Word from adding line beneath image

The word "Classification" is normal text and then the table is a .png image I have inserted into the Word document. When I do so it adds that black line beneath the image. I do not want that line to appear. I know for a fact that word is inserting it and that is not in my original image because I can crop out the bottom of the image and the line remains.

The other thread on this topic suggested disabling the Border Lines option under Proofing but it made no difference.

The AutoFormat As You Type option (shown in the AutoCorrect dialog box) will only control automatic insertion of borders, for example, when you type three asterisks and then press Enter. You can't use the option to remove existing borders.

To remove an existing border, use the Borders and Shading dialog box. See the screen shot below.

Display nonprinting marks, for example by clicking the ¶ icon on the Home tab. Select the paragraph mark that is immediately below the table. Then go to the Home tab on the ribbon, click the arrow on the border button (in the Paragraph group) and then click Borders and Shading. In the dialog box, go to the Borders tab, make sure that "Apply to" is set to "Paragraph," click the "None" option and confirm with OK.

The black line is simply underlining that is carried over from the underlining of the font in word "Classification"

Either apply the underlining to the word "Classification" after inserting the image, or select the image and then click on the Underlining button in the Font section of the Home tab of the ribbon to toggle off the underlining.

    Hi @Kyle,

I hope you are doing well.

Thank you for the screenshot and for sharing those additional details. To help check this more accurately, could you please upload a sample Word document where the issue occurs to your personal OneDrive and share the link here with edit permission enabled?

Having access to the affected document will make it easier to compare them directly and determine whether the line is being added by the document formatting, the image formatting, or a setting within Word.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during the process. I'm looking forward to your response.

The black line is a paragraph border that Word is applying to the paragraph after the image, not part of the image itself and not an AutoCorrect “border line.” Remove it from the paragraph formatting instead of from AutoCorrect.

    Use one of these methods:

    1. Place the insertion point in the paragraph that shows the black line (the empty paragraph directly under the image).
    2. On the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, open the Borders dropdown and choose “No Border.”

Or, to clear it via the dialog:

    1. Place the insertion point in that same paragraph.
    2. Open the Paragraph dialog (small launcher arrow in the Paragraph group).
    3. Go to the Borders tab.
    4. Make sure all borders are set to “None,” then confirm with OK.

If the line keeps reappearing when pressing Enter after similar headings, modify the style used for that paragraph (for example, Normal or a custom style) and remove any bottom border from the style’s paragraph formatting.
