Switching out of S mode in Windows 11 is done through the Microsoft Store and is a one-way change. If the process is failing with “something went wrong, try again,” use the supported path and ensure the correct Store page is opened.
Steps to switch out of S mode on Windows 11 Home:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Activation.
- Under the Switch to Windows 11 Pro (or similar) section, select the Go to the Store link.
- Do not select the link under Upgrade your edition of Windows; that path keeps the device in S mode.
- In Microsoft Store, the Switch out of S mode (or similar) page should open. Select Get.
- After the confirmation message appears, apps from outside Microsoft Store can be installed.
If the in-Settings link is not working correctly, use the direct Store link for switching out of S mode:
- Select this link on the device:
- When the Store page opens, select Get and wait for the confirmation.
Important notes:
- Switching out of S mode is permanent; it is not possible to switch back to S mode afterward.
- If the device is managed by an organization (for example, work or school), the administrator can enforce S mode and block the switch. In that case, contact the administrator.
If the error persists even when using the correct Store page, ensure the device is online and signed in with a Microsoft account in the Store, then retry from the same Switch out of S mode page.
