To download an app from Google Play on an Android device (including devices like Surface Duo that run Android), use the Google Play Store app rather than Google Play Games:
- On the Home screen, tap Play Store.
- In the Play Store, search for the app or game by name.
- Tap the app in the results.
- Tap Install and wait for the download and installation to complete.
- Tap Open to launch the app.
If an error appears when trying to download (for example, random-number error codes in Google Play), try these steps on the Android device:
- Clear Google Play Store cache
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps or Application Manager.
- Go to All apps and select Google Play Store.
- Tap Force stop, then Clear cache.
- Repeat for Google Play services.
- Try downloading the app again.
- Clear Google Play Store data (if cache alone does not help)
- In Settings > Apps > All apps > Google Play Store.
- Tap Force stop, then Clear data.
- Try the download again.
- Remove and re-add the Google account (if issues persist)
- Open Settings.
- Go to Users & accounts / Passwords, passkeys & accounts / Manage accounts (name varies by device).
- Select the Google account, tap Remove account, and confirm.
- Restart the device.
- Add the Google account again and then try downloading the app.
If the device manufacturer requires a specific feature to be enabled on its website or in its own settings app (for example, a parental control or device feature toggle), that must be done following the manufacturer’s instructions, as that part is outside Google Play and Windows.
