Hi, I'm John! I will help you with this.

There was actually a recent known issue with Outlook/Hotmail, especially affecting iOS/iPad devices. Microsoft has already fixed the service issue, but some users still need to re-enter their password to get emails syncing again. Source: https://portal.office.com/servicestatus

Right now, most cases like yours are fixed by re-adding or updating the account.

If you’re using Apple Mail (default app):

    • Go to Settings > Mail > Accounts
    • Tap your email account
    • Tap Account Settings / Password
    • Re-enter your password
    • Save, then open Mail again

If that doesn’t work, remove and add the account again.

Your emails are stored on the server. They should come back after syncing.

Can you see your emails when you log in at https://outlook.live.com/mail using a browser?

On iPad, Outlook for iOS does not store the only copy of email; it syncs with the mail server (Outlook.com, Microsoft 365, IMAP, etc.). Reloading the app should not permanently delete messages if they still exist in the mailbox.

To restore access to email on the iPad:

    1. Verify the account still works on the server
      • Sign in to the same email account using a web browser (for example, Outlook.com in a browser on a PC/Mac or the iPad).
      • Confirm that messages are present in Inbox and other folders.
      • If messages are missing in the browser as well, use the recovery options below (for Outlook.com accounts):
        • Check Junk Email, Other (Focused Inbox), and Deleted Items folders.
        • In Deleted Items, if the mail is not visible, select Recover items deleted from this folder (this must be done from a computer, not from the iPad apps or mobile browser). Messages removed from Deleted Items are recoverable for 30 days.
    2. Check Junk/Other/Deleted on Outlook for iOS
      • In Outlook for iOS, open:
        • Junk Email folder and move any valid messages back to Inbox.
        • Other tab (if Focused Inbox is enabled) and move messages to Focused Inbox.
        • Deleted Items folder and move any valid messages back to Inbox.
    3. Remove and re-add the account in Outlook for iOS
      • In Outlook for iOS, remove the email account, then add it again.
      • After re-adding, allow time for the app to resync all folders from the server.
    4. If the account is Outlook.com and email is missing from the server
      • Use a computer browser to sign in to Outlook.com.
      • Check Junk Email, Other tab, and Deleted Items.
      • In Deleted Items, select Recover items deleted from this folder and restore any needed messages, keeping in mind:
        • Messages removed from Deleted Items are only recoverable for 30 days.
        • Messages automatically removed from Junk Email after 30 days are not recoverable.

If the mailbox itself was closed due to long-term inactivity (no sign-in for at least one year), all email is permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
