I am using Win-11 Home and need to remote into a system using Win-11 Pro.

What are the steps I need to setup on my end, and what steps are necessary on the Pro end?

Many thanks,

    Hi,

Your computer is a home computer and the computer you're going to access is a Pro computer, so there's no problem. You just need to have MSTSC installed on your PC, which comes natively.

In the search bar, type MSTSC. When it opens, you need to enter the IP address of the Windows 11 Pro machine and access it.

First of all, on the machine you're going to access, you need to enable remote access > Start menu > Settings > System > Remote Desktop > check the Remote Desktop option and click the arrow, then uncheck the option "Require devices to use network level authentication to connect".

On the Windows 11 Pro PC (the one to connect to):

    1. Confirm it is running a Pro edition
      • Select Start > Settings > System > About.
      • Under Windows specifications, check Edition is Windows 11 Pro (or another Pro/Enterprise/Education edition).
    2. Enable Remote Desktop
      • Select Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
      • Turn Remote Desktop to On, then select Confirm.
      • Note the PC name shown; this will be needed to connect.
      • Ensure the user account that will sign in remotely is either:
        • A member of Administrators, or
        • Added under Select users that can remotely access this PC.
    3. Check basic prerequisites
      • The Pro PC must be powered on and connected to the network.
      • Remote Desktop must be allowed through the firewall (this is normally configured automatically when enabling Remote Desktop).
      • If connecting over the internet (not just the same local network), configure port forwarding or a VPN as appropriate.

On the Windows 11 Home PC (the one used to connect from):

    1. Understand edition requirements
      • Windows 11 Home cannot act as a Remote Desktop host, but it can be used as a client to connect to a Pro PC. No upgrade is required on the Home side for this.
    2. Connect using Remote Desktop
      • In the taskbar search box, type Remote Desktop Connection and open it.
      • In Computer, enter the PC name of the Pro machine noted earlier.
      • Select Connect, then sign in with a user account that has remote access on the Pro PC.

On mobile or other devices (optional):

    • On macOS or iOS: Install Windows App from the Microsoft Store or Apple App Store, add the Pro PC name, and connect.
    • On Android: Install the Remote Desktop app from Google Play, add the Pro PC name, and connect.

If the Pro PC is not yet Pro (for example, a Surface with Windows 11 Home):

    • Upgrade it to Windows 11 Pro (required to host Remote Desktop):
      • On the device, open Settings > System > Activation.
      • Select Open Store and follow the prompts to purchase and upgrade to Windows 11 Pro, then restart.
      • Alternatively, use the Upgrade to Windows 11 Pro option from the Microsoft Store as described in the references.
