    Hi Martin Biney,

Thank you for posting your question here!

Since the built in camera on the Dell Inspiron 3551 is not being detected in any application and WhatsApp is also reporting that no microphone is available, this strongly suggests a driver, BIOS, or hardware detection problem. The first thing to check is Device Manager to see whether the camera appears under Cameras or Imaging devices and whether the microphone appears under Audio inputs and outputs. If either is missing or shows an error, Windows is not properly detecting the hardware. Next, restart the laptop and enter the BIOS by pressing F2, then confirm that the integrated camera and microphone are enabled. If they are disabled at the BIOS level, Windows will never see them.

    Best regards,

    Angelique P.

Follow these steps in order, testing the camera after each step (for example with the Camera app or WhatsApp Desktop):

    1. Check hardware privacy controls
      • On many Dell laptops a function key can disable the camera.
      • Look along F1–F12 for a key with a camera icon and press it once.
      • If that does nothing, try Fn + that camera key.
      • Check the bezel above the screen for a physical privacy slider over the lens and slide it open.
    2. Verify Windows camera privacy settings
      • Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Camera.
      • Make sure Camera access is turned On.
      • Make sure Let apps access your camera is turned On.
      • In Choose which apps can access your camera, turn on access for any Microsoft Store apps that should use it.
      • Scroll down and ensure Allow desktop apps to access your camera is turned On, so desktop apps like browsers and WhatsApp can use it.
    3. Test the camera in the Camera app
      • Select Start > Camera.
      • If prompted, allow access to the camera and microphone.
      • If the preview works here but not in WhatsApp, adjust WhatsApp’s own camera/microphone settings.
    4. Run Windows camera troubleshooter (Windows 11/10)
    5. Check antivirus/firewall
      • Some security software can block camera and microphone.
      • Open the antivirus app and look for camera/webcam or microphone protection settings.
      • Temporarily disable those protections and test the camera. Re‑enable protection after testing.
    6. Update camera driver and Windows
      • Right‑click Start > Device Manager.
      • Expand Cameras (or Imaging devices on some systems).
      • If a camera is listed, right‑click it > Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
      • Then go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and also check Advanced options > Optional updates for camera/driver updates.
      • Restart the PC and test again.
    7. If the camera is missing from Device Manager
      • If no device appears under Cameras or Imaging devices, the camera may be disabled at hardware level (function key/BIOS) or have a hardware fault.
      • Re‑check the function key and privacy slider.
      • If still missing, go to Dell’s support site for the Latitude 3551, download and install the latest webcam/camera driver and chipset drivers, restart, and check Device Manager again.

If after these steps the camera still does not appear in Device Manager or work in the Camera app, the built‑in camera or its connection inside the laptop is likely faulty and requires Dell hardware service.
