The account was locked because Microsoft detected activity that looks risky or unusual, such as frequent sign-ins from different locations or networks (for example, rapidly switching VPN servers and regions). This can trigger a temporary block to protect the account and Microsoft services.
To unlock the Microsoft account:
- Go to https://account.microsoft.com and try to sign in.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to get a security code and verify identity.
- Any phone number can be used to receive the security code; it does not have to be previously associated with the account and does not need to be a smartphone, only able to receive SMS.
- After entering the code, complete any required steps such as creating a new password.
If sign-in is blocked due to unusual activity:
- Follow the instructions on the sign-in screen and choose where to receive the security code (email, phone, or other available method).
- If traveling or using a different network and the normal verification options are not available:
- Try signing in from a trusted device or usual location that was used before.
- If a trusted device was set up previously, sign in from that device to regain access.
If a block persists or a “Try another verification method” message appears:
- Try a different verification method already configured on the account (for example, alternate email instead of SMS, or vice versa).
- Try another network (switch between Wi‑Fi and mobile data, or use a different Wi‑Fi network).
- Wait at least 24 hours without repeated attempts, as repeated sign-in or verification attempts can extend a temporary block. If there is still no change, wait longer (up to about a week) before trying again.
To reduce the chance of future locks:
- Avoid rapidly changing VPN locations, especially across distant regions in a short time.
- Sign in mainly from usual devices and locations.
- Follow the Microsoft Services Agreement and avoid any activity that could be interpreted as spam, abuse, or automated/bot behavior.
If the account shows “That Microsoft account doesn’t exist” when trying to sign in, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper linked in the documentation.
