    Dear @Imbasan Group,

I understand you are currently unable to access your account due to issues with the account multi-factor authentication. The error code 399287 encountered when using the SMS/Phone method indicates that the account has been flagged with a reputation concern.

In this situation, please reach out to your IT Admin or Global Administrator to reset your MFA settings through the Microsoft Entra admin center. This involves revoking the current MFA session and "require re-register your authentication methods" mentioning in this document: Manage authentication methods for Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication

    enter image description here

In case you are the only user/admin of the organization, our Data Protection team can support you in this matter by using established tools and processes to verify your identity and help restore secure access to your administrator account.

Please note that forum moderators have no control over user accounts, especially when it comes to logging in to your account, resetting your password, changing your access, etc.

Therefore, please try to find the related hotline number to call the frontline let them raise a ticket for you: Customer service phone numbers - Microsoft Support

If your organization's Office 365 Business/Education subscription is from a partner or reseller, and the global administrator is unable to open a service request on your end, contact the reseller's support provider to help open a service request on behalf of you instead.

I hope this information helps you take the right steps to regain access to your account. If you have any updates or additional details, please feel free to leave a comment under this post. I’ll be happy to assist further within my scope.

Error code 399287 indicates that Microsoft Entra multifactor authentication (MFA) has effectively blocked SMS verification for the phone number, often due to a “bad reputation” or unusual activity. Because Teams sign-in is using that same MFA method, all devices fail with “sorry, we're having trouble verifying your account” when SMS is selected.

From the documented and moderator-confirmed resolutions, this cannot be fixed from the user side; it requires Microsoft support to reset or adjust MFA on the account/tenant.

    Recommended steps:

    1. Stop repeated sign-in/SMS attempts
Multiple failed MFA attempts and repeated SMS requests can cause or prolong blocking. Wait before trying again and avoid repeatedly requesting new codes.
    2. Check for any alternative MFA methods
If any other verification options were previously configured (Microsoft Authenticator app, alternate phone, or email-based verification), choose Other verification options on the sign-in screen and try one of those instead.
If another method works, sign in and review/update security info (phone numbers, methods) as described in the two-step verification guidance.
    3. If SMS is the only MFA method, contact Microsoft support (Data Protection team)
For error 399287 with no working alternative MFA method, the documented successful resolutions involved Microsoft’s Data Protection team resetting MFA:
      • Open a support case via your Microsoft 365/Entra tenant as an admin, or
      • If locked out of the only admin account, call Microsoft support using the customer service phone numbers and clearly state that:
        • This is a work/school (company) account.
        • Sign-in to Microsoft 365/Teams fails at MFA with SMS and error 399287.
        • SMS is the only configured MFA method and cannot be changed because sign-in is blocked. The Data Protection team has specific tools and processes to verify identity and reset MFA for locked administrator or work accounts.
    4. If you are the only admin and cannot open a ticket from the affected tenant
      The documented workaround is:
      • Create a temporary new Microsoft 365 trial tenant.
      • From that new tenant’s admin center, go to Support → Help & support and open a ticket.
      • In the ticket, specify that you are locked out of a different existing tenant, provide the affected tenant domain and admin UPN, describe the 399287 error and SMS MFA issue, and request Data Protection team assistance to reset MFA on the original tenant.
      • After the original tenant issue is resolved, cancel the trial to avoid charges.
    5. After Microsoft resets MFA
Once support has cleared the block/reset MFA, sign in again, then:
      • Add at least one additional MFA method (e.g., Microsoft Authenticator app plus a second phone number).
      • Avoid excessive or repetitive SMS code requests to reduce the chance of future blocking.

Because this is an account protection mechanism on Microsoft’s side, only Microsoft support (specifically the Data Protection team) can remove the block and restore SMS verification for error 399287.
