Hello Microsoft Team,

We are currently facing an issue on multiple MacBooks where the following popup appears repeatedly:

“EdgeUpdater would like to access data from other apps.”

Environment:

  • macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel devices)
  • Microsoft Edge latest version
  • Corporate-managed devices

Issue:

  • The popup appears frequently even after clicking “Allow”
  • Sometimes it requests administrator credentials repeatedly
  • This is causing inconvenience to end users

Actions already tried:

  1. Granted permissions under:
    • Privacy & Security
      • Full Disk Access
        • Files & Folders
        1. Restarted the Mac
        2. Reinstalled Microsoft Edge
        3. Removed Microsoft Edge support folders and reinstalled latest version

Questions:

  1. Is this expected behavior with the latest macOS security model?
  2. Is there any official Microsoft recommendation to suppress or prevent this popup?
  3. Is there a supported PPPC/Intune/Jamf configuration for enterprise environments?
  4. Is there any known issue with EdgeUpdater on Apple Silicon devices?

Thank you for your support.Hello Microsoft Team,

    Hi,

    This is a known bug.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftEdge/comments/1t7jgx8/edgeupdater_would_like_to_access_data_from_other/

This is seen with Entra devices managed by Intune.

Your IT Admins can suppress the messages using this:

For my Intune admins out there, you can deploy a PPPC config to suppress these messages. You’ll want to target the following identifiers:

    1.	com.microsoft.edgemac
    2.	com.microsoft.edgeupdater
    3.	com.microsoft.edgeupdate

I’m eager to hear back and work together to find a solution.

    1. The repeated “EdgeUpdater would like to access data from other apps” prompts are related to the new EdgeUpdater mechanism that replaced Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS starting with Microsoft Edge 113. EdgeUpdater is responsible for keeping Microsoft Edge up to date and secure and, as part of that, it interacts with the system and other app data. The provided documentation confirms the switch to EdgeUpdater and its role in updates, but doesn’t describe repeated permission prompts as expected or normal behavior.
    2. Official guidance for enterprises focuses on managing EdgeUpdater behavior via policies rather than interactive prompts. For macOS, Edge 113+ uses EdgeUpdater and can be controlled with the UpdateDefault and related policies in the com.microsoft.EdgeUpdater preference domain. Administrators can:
      • Allow Edge to update itself by default (recommended), or
      • Use a managed plist to disable or tightly control updates.
The documented example shows how to create and deploy com.microsoft.EdgeUpdater.plist via Intune or Jamf to control update behavior, including disabling EdgeUpdater entirely if required. This is the supported way to prevent EdgeUpdater from running (and therefore from triggering related prompts) on managed devices.
    3. For PPPC/Intune/Jamf configuration, the supported approach in enterprise environments is to deploy a managed preference file for EdgeUpdater:
      • Create com.microsoft.EdgeUpdater.plist with the desired update policies (for example, using UpdateDefault to disable or restrict updates).
      • Deploy via:
        • Intune: macOS device configuration profile, Preference file type, preference domain com.microsoft.EdgeUpdater, upload the plist.
        • Jamf: upload the plist as a Custom Settings payload.
      • For local testing, place the plist at /Library/Managed Preferences/com.microsoft.EdgeUpdater.plist and set ownership to root:wheel.
This is the documented, supported configuration path for managing EdgeUpdater behavior on macOS in enterprise scenarios.
    4. The available documentation does not list any specific known issue with EdgeUpdater that is unique to Apple Silicon devices. Edge is supported natively on Apple Silicon Macs, and the EdgeUpdater change applies to macOS generally rather than to a specific CPU architecture.

If the prompts persist after deploying a managed configuration that disables or limits EdgeUpdater, the next step in an enterprise environment would be to open a support case so that logs and specific macOS privacy prompts can be reviewed.
