Unable to access Outlook Email

I have been unable to access my Outlook account. Whenever I go to outlook.live.com the webpage never loads. Whenever I try to log into my email, after I input my account info, I receive an error message stating "Unable to log in. There was an unexpected error. Please try again." I am still logged into my email on the app version on my laptop, however, it does not update or receive new emails.

This issue has been persistent on four different devices and on different wifi connections.

Did you get the Error: 401?

Many users are having the same issue right now. Last time this happened, it had to be fixed from Microsoft's side. I believe this is a Microsoft server-side issue. There's no official acknowledgement at the moment, but I believe there's nothing you can do on your end until Microsoft fixes this.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot Outlook.com not loading and not sending/receiving mail:

    1. Check storage and account status
    • If Microsoft cloud storage is full, sending and receiving email stops and messages sent during that time are bounced and unrecoverable.
    • Check mailbox storage using the storage page linked from the Outlook.com article and free up space if needed.
    • If the account has been temporarily blocked due to unusual sign-in activity, follow the steps in the unblock guide to restore access.
    1. Verify sign-in and password
    • If the password was changed recently, update it everywhere it is used.
    • If sign-in fails in the browser, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper to resolve sign-in issues.
    1. Fix device/app sync issues
    • Since the app on the laptop is still signed in but not updating, treat this as a sync problem.
    • Remove the partnership between each affected device and the Outlook mailbox, then re-add the account. This often resolves sync issues on specific devices.
    • If using a non-Microsoft email app, ensure it supports Modern Authentication for Outlook.com accounts. If it does not, install and use the Outlook app instead.
    1. Try browser-specific fixes
    • Sign out of all Microsoft sessions, then sign back in.
    • Clear browser cache and cookies, then retry Outlook.com.
    • Test Outlook.com in an InPrivate/Incognito window and with browser extensions (especially ad blockers/VPNs) disabled.
    • If Outlook.com works only in private mode, reset the browser settings and re-test.
    1. If the problem persists
    • Use the interactive Outlook.com troubleshooter linked in the article for step-by-step diagnostics.
    • From Outlook.com (if it loads at least partially), open Help and use the Still need help? path to contact support. If sign-in is not possible at all, use the dedicated “can’t sign in” support link from the article.
