After installing update KB5089549 on my laptop, a mysterious SecureBoot folder suddenly appeared in the C:\Windows directory. What exactly is it?

What’s more, after my Windows 10 desktop installed updates KB5087544 and KB5088863, the same SecureBoot folder appeared there as well.

For the time being, it’s probably better to leave the folder alone. After a few weeks, it may be safe to let Windows remove it automatically.

That C:\Windows\SecureBoot folder is almost certainly related to Microsoft’s Secure Boot certificate update work. Microsoft is replacing older Secure Boot certificates issued in 2011 because they start expiring in 2026. The newer 2023 certificates are being delivered through Windows Update, and Microsoft has been adding Secure Boot status, servicing, and update components to Windows 10 and Windows 11 updates.
